Substratum is the configuration immediately below the finished flooring. If the flooring is damp and below-grade concrete the choice of adhesive must be chosen with care. Dry and superior grade flooring needs different bonding material. In case of plywood flooring hardwood bonding material must be applied. In case of radiant heating speciality adhesive should be used. The interiors of the home do not face harsh climatic conditions and water dampness. However, if the flooring is in openness choose an adhesive that can cope up with sun, snow, rain and winter season. Some adhesive does well in warm and humid region of the home. Certain others can cope up with freezing temperatures.
Read the instructions on the label of the adhesive. It will make you wiser and make sensible selection. If the label reads sentence like it may be used for on it. This goes to show that the effectiveness of the product is doubtful. Some chemical adhesive gives out volatile organic compounds or VOC leading to toxicity in the surroundings. Some flooring materials like cork, linoleum, vinyl etc come with self-adhesive backing. While installing them just peel of the protective paper and lay out the tiles applying moderate pressure. No other adhesive is required. Drying time for adhesive is different. The amount of adhesive applied also affects its drying. Walk over the flooring once it is dry.
Select an adhesive which is easy to spread all over the substrate. If the layer is very slim it is likely to wash out soon. If more than required adhesive is applied, it will be difficult to spread it evenly. Calculate the amount of adhesive required through area calculation. Approximately 10% is wasted during the process. The packing will give rough estimate of the area that the adhesive can cover. Adhesive come with shelf life. Some of them can be stored for a long without damage to the quality. Adhesive is very difficult to clean up after work is over. Water-based adhesive are very convenient to clean up from surfaces. Solvent-based adhesive are stubborn to remove.
The concrete or any other type of flooring can be covered with interlocking rubber tiles. These tiles need no adhesive. Moreover, it is easy to install and maintain clean. The ones with 8mm thickness are lasting. These tiles are so designed that they can tolerate weight of furniture and gym equipment. If the area covered is large, then it is best to use 3×3 ft interlocking tiles. These tiles are in demand in basement flooring, gym, garage, etc. The surface is non-slip and durable.
