How to Prevent Mice From Entering Your Home: 7 Methods to Trap Them Before They Get In!

January 27, 2019

Some house guests are welcome in your home while others aren’t. So it goes without saying that mice fall into the latter category. In fact, mice are considered one of the least desirable types of pests to discover in your living space.

That’s why it’s important to know how to prevent mice from entering your home. If you’ve ever discovered an infestation of mice, you understand first-hand how unpleasant this can be.

Let’s take a look at some of the best ways to stop mice from entering your home and help keep them away forever.

How to Prevent Mice From Entering Your Home: 7 Methods to Trap Them Before They Get In!

Are you trying to find ways to mouse-proof your home? Take a look at these 7 effective methods.

1. Reduce Points of Entry

The first thing you need to consider for keeping mice out is to eliminate entry points into your home. After all, the more effective you can be at preventing them from finding a way inside, the less you will have to deal with getting them out.

Eliminating points of entry such as cracks in walls or the foundation, gaps around doors and windows, and small openings around pipes can be challenging. This is because mice are small and can squeeze through very narrow spaces.

The least expensive way to solve this problem is with weather stripping. Or replace windows and doors, and repair any cracks that you happen to find.

2. Practice Good Sanitation

Believe it or not, sanitation is one of the most important aspects of pest control in your home. Just be aware that even though good sanitation might not be able to get rid of mice, but poor sanitation will most definitely attract them.

Keep in mind that mice can survive on very little food each day, so even a few crumbs are enough to attract them and keep them around. Always store food in airtight containers and sweep the floors. And make it a habit to keep your garbage in secure containers.

Mice have sharp incisors that are able to chew through nearly anything, so leaving plastic bags out in the open is simply an invitation for them to come to have a tasty snack.

3. Using Bait Stations

Bait stations can be very effective at getting rid of mice, yet should only be handled by trained pest management professional and kept out of reach of pets and children.

These are sealed packages containing pellets or meal that are designed for the mice to easily chew through and eat the fresh bait awaiting them inside. Once the bait is consumed, the mice will die.

4. Using Mouse Traps

The most common way most people deal with mice inside their home is with the use of mouse traps. This is the safest and most effective way of eliminating an infestation.

There are a number of different kinds of traps to choose from, include live traps, wooden traps, and glue traps.

The best strategy for traps is to use plenty of them. It’s recommended that you use a combination of the different types and spread them throughout various areas of your home. This will provide you with the greatest chance of wiping out the entire infestation.

Traps are also just one of several methods for eliminating rats in the attic.

5. Choosing the Best Kind of Bait For Your Mouse Traps

Once you’ve purchased mouse traps for your home, you’ll need to select bait for use in luring the mice into the traps. There are several types of bait to choose from, such as peanut butter, dried fruit, bacon, cheese, chocolate, or oatmeal. Each of these works well and will effectively attract mice to the trap.

The best technique for setting the trap is to tie the bait to the trigger using dental floss or fishing line. This ensures that the mice won’t be able to steal the bait without getting caught. Another option is to secure the bait to the trap using a glue gun.

Be sure to replace the bait with fresh bait every few days. And if the bait isn’t working, replace it with something else, and try adding nesting material such as twin or cotton balls in order to increase the level of attraction.

6. Keep the Inside and Outside of Your Home Tidy

The simple truth is that mice love places to hide. And because they are so small, it takes very little for them to hide away where you’re unlikely to notice them.

Make an effort to keep your lawn mowed and weeds to a minimum. This goes a long way toward destroying areas for mice to nest. Remove debris and clean up clutter, and consider lining the foundation of your home with gravel to help keep them from nesting and burrowing in cracks.

Keep in mind that the fewer places there are for pests like mice to hide, the easier it will be for you to spot them and take action to get rid of them.

7. Using Cats to Keep Mice Away

One of the best natural deterrents for mice is to own a cat. After all, cats love to hunt mice. And cats allow you to get rid of them without having to deal with buying traps or the mess of loading them with bait.

Cats are especially popular with farmers for controlling mice populations in and around barns. So if you’ve been considering getting a cat for your home, now might be a great time to visit your local animal shelter to adopt an awesome fur baby!

Protecting Your Home From a Mouse Infestation

Learning how to seal your home from mice doesn’t have to be complicated. The most important thing is to take a few common-sense steps to keep your place tidy and clear of clutter.

Understanding how to prevent mice from entering your home is a simple matter of eliminating places for them to hide and then placing traps in the most strategic areas where they are likely to find the bait. Follow the steps in the article, and your home should be free of mice in no time!
