How to Move Heavy Furniture: 4 Important Tips to Remember

March 8, 2020

There are few things more frustrating than trying to move a clunky piece of furniture. Not only could you drop the thing and break it, but you could also damage your home, hurt your back, pull a muscle, or drop the thing onto your toe.

The fact remains, though, that sometimes you just have to move that thing. You don’t have time to call a friend or a company, or you do have a friend and you both are at a loss for how to get that couch into the truck.

Whatever the issue, we’re here to provide you some tips on how to move heavy furniture. Let’s get to it.

How to Move Heavy Furniture: the Basics

First things first, never put yourself in danger. While we all like to overestimate our own strength, some pieces of furniture are not to be messed with.

You could do serious, lasting damage to your body or actually injure the person you’re moving with. Pianos, for example, are one such item. Get some ideas from these piano movers before you try to move your grandpa’s old ivories.

1. Strip the Item Down

If there are any pieces of the item you’re moving that you can take off, do it. Any little bit you can extract will lighten the load for you to move.

A great example of this is drawers in dressers. Additionally, many large pieces of furniture are able to be disassembled. Older pieces of furniture, though, are typically just one huge chunk, unfortunately.

2. Clear the Path

If you’re going to be lumbering down your hallways, stairs, and through the doorway, you’ll want to make sure that you limit the number of things that can get in your way.

You don’t want to be lifting over things and stepping over stray toys on the ground, for example. Take down the pictures on the wall, prop the door open, and ensure that there’s an absolutely clear path.

Even take the door off of its hinges if you suspect that the space will be too tight. A tape measure will be your best friend in these instances.

3. Use Tools

There are a lot of straps, trollies, and carts that are designed specifically for moving furniture. Do a little research online and you’ll likely find a cheap option that will lighten your load and distribute the weight evenly upon your body.

4. Lift with Your Legs, Stop if You Have to

The age-old saying, “lift with your legs,” is still as applicable as ever. Bend down, get a good hold, and use the strength of your legs to lift that load.

Also, don’t overdo it. Just because you’ve picked something up, doesn’t mean you can’t put it right back down. There’s no shame in stopping because the task is too large.

In fact, we commend you for stopping. It’s the smartest thing to do.
