5 Sleepwear Fabrics to Help you Sleep Better

August 25, 2020

Figuring out how to sleep better is harder than it sounds. Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule and getting enough sleep are good places to start. You can do more by preparing a positive sleeping environment and following good sleep hygiene practices. Your bedrooms temperature, the light and noise levels and the food you eat and drink can all be adjusted for better sleep. However, if you are still not sleeping well then you should consider you sleepwear fabric. Finding the right pajamas made with the best materials can make a world of difference to your sleep quality.

When you are doing some online shopping for new pajamas, make sure you focus on the fabric. Firstly, your sleepwear has to feel good as soon as you put it on. If you do not like the slippery sensation of satin sleepwear, then you will struggle to fall asleep wearing them. When you do fall asleep, your subconscious will register the discomfort these pajamas cause, and you will not be able to rest properly. Temperature is another important aspect of night time comfort. Your pajamas should help your body maintain a constant temperature that is optimal for restful sleep.

1. Cotton

Cotton is a completely natural fabric that is lightweight and soft. It is also a breathable material that allows for air to circulate around your body, keeping you cool while you sleep. Cotton is very kind to your skin and is unlikely to cause irritation. On the other hand, cotton does not help your body retain its heat. This makes it a poor choice if you struggle to stay warm at night. Cotton also struggles to wick away moisture. This makes it a poor choice for anyone prone to sweating in their sleep.

2. Silk

Silk is a wonderful material for keeping your body at the right temperature. This material will help you retain heat on cold nights and cool down when you are too hot. The problem with silk is that it is expensive and requires dry-cleaning. It is also a slippery material which will move around while you sleep and may feel unpleasant.

3. Flannel

Flannel is one of the best materials when you want your pajamas to keep you warm. Like cotton, flannel is a breathable material that helps your body stay within its thermal comfort zone. Maintaining this consistent temperature all night helps you sleep better. If you find that you are already warm while sleeping, flannel may prove to be too much so avoid this material if you are worried about overheating.

4. Bamboo

Bamboo is growing increasingly popular as a sustainable clothing material. The fibres of this plant make bamboo bed sheets and pyjamas that are wonderfully soft and comfortable. Like some of the other materials listed, bamboo wicks moisture away from your skin to keep you at a comfortable temperature all night. Bamboo is also a hypoallergenic material with antibacterial properties which makes it a great choice for people with allergies.

5. Wool

You can consider woolen pajamas if you have a seriously difficult time staying warm at night. Wool is a better insulator than any other material on this list, but it is also the most likely to cause overheating while you sleep. Also, wool frequently irritates the skin and causes itching sensations that make sleeping peacefully difficult. Finally, wool does not allow for air circulation causing the wearer to sweat more while sleeping.

Other Important Details

While you are shopping for sleepwear, you should the following after choosing your fabric type. Aim for loose pajamas. Most people move around in their sleep, and wearing restrictive clothing in bed will prevent you from resting properly. Other features like buttons or tags can cause irritation when you sleep, so try and minimize any additional accessories on your sleepwear.

Do not neglect your feet either. If your feet are too cold then you will not sleep properly. Wearing ordinary socks in bed can cause your feet and then the rest of your body to overheat. The solution, if you suffer from cold feet at night, is to wear socks that are made from the same material as your pajamas.

Comfort Comes First

Choosing the right material for your sleepwear is about putting your comfort first. Finding the right material will make a huge difference in your quality of life.
