Halloween Safety Tips for Pets

September 14, 2023

Spooky season has arrived! Do you know how to take care of your animals during Halloween?

This holiday is fun and spooky, but there are risks for your pet. Animal parents need to take certain measures to keep their furry friends safe. These include keeping candy out of reach, creating a quiet space in your home, and watching out for decoration hazards. Let’s take a look at how these tips will keep your animal happy and healthy this October.

Keep Candy Out of Reach

Halloween candy is yummy for humans, but most are poisonous to pets! It is important to take precautions so your animals do not consume any of these sweets.

Store all treats where animals cannot get to them. Keep them in a sealed container for extra protection! Put the candies up high in a cabinet or behind a closed door. Some furry friends are sneaky, though, so always keep an eye on them when they are near these areas.

Another way to keep your dog out of harm’s way is to use baby gates. These create a barrier to keep them out of rooms they are not allowed in. Store candies in the area behind the gate to deter your dog. However, if you have animals that are able to climb or jump over the gate, forgo this idea and shut the door instead.

Make a Safe Space Indoors

Dedicate a space specifically for your dog or cat prior to Halloween night. Doing this before the holiday gives them a chance to learn this spot is just for them.

This area is used for quiet time when it is noisy or if there is a lot of activity in other areas of the house. Use a crate, animal bed, or blankets to mark the area. Make it extra special and keep some of their favorite toys there, too.

It is important that this area is used only by your pet. Set it up in a low-traffic area, like a closet, bathroom, or guest bedroom. Tell family members that the area is off-limits and not to touch or go near their space. This way, Fido knows he can safely retreat to this spot when he feels scared or overwhelmed.

Be Mindful of Decorations

Keep seasonal decor to a minimum inside your home. Many of these items are dangerous or pose a safety threat. They present a risk for gastrointestinal issues, choking, and many are fatal if ingested.

Keep costumes, fake spider webs, and glow sticks out of harm’s way. Avoid small decorative items that have beads, plastic spiders, or other small parts. Also, avoid decorations that make a lot of noise or sudden movements. Humans may think they are fun, but dogs and cats get very startled. Avoid these so everyone is calmer.

It is important to be prepared for the potential health and safety risks that can happen during Halloween time – especially if you have a lot of little trick-or-treaters visiting your home.
