What Are The Different Types of Steak

January 19, 2019

Steaks have always been a crowd favorite in America. You cannot find a place in the United States that does not have a steakhouse. Especially when you live in New York, there are many scattered all across the five boroughs. Cooking recipes have also evolved and, because of the rich culture in NY, you can find numerous restaurants offering different steak dishes. There are Japanese steakhouses, Mexican grills, American diners, and kosher restaurants in Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens, Staten Island, and Brooklyn. You should check one out to get a taste.

Here are the choice cuts you should try out in these restaurants:

Top sirloin

Top sirloin is the most flavorful cut known to man; taken from near the rear end of the animal, located right below the area where you would usually get your tenderloin strips. This area of the animal is very muscular. Hence, it is not as tender as the other kinds of cut. But, if you cook it just right (usually cooking it rare or medium-rare), you will get the delicate balance of the incredible flavor and softness as you like it.

Filet mignon

You cannot go wrong with filet mignon. You will feel like a king or queen once you take a bite of this delicious cut. Most of them are sliced two to three inches thick. It is also sometimes referred to as the tenderloin. But, you should know that filet mignon is actually just a portion of it. It is the section between the ribs and towards the tail-end of the animal. That is why it is so tender which makes it the perfect choice for grilling.

Rib eye

The rib eye is undoubtedly one of the all-time American favorites. It is the classic go-to steak you will buy if you are going to prepare for a backyard party. The reason why it is so popular is that it has an incredible marbling that gives the meat the perfect texture and rich flavor. As you can guess from the name it has, the cut is made in the ribcage area of the animal. This type of steak is somewhere between a quarter to an inch in thickness. When grilling, most chefs choose to cut closer to one inch so that all the flavor and juice will come out.

T-bone

This cut comes from the short loin. You slice it off closer to the stomach than the rump. This type of steak is always tender, and it can give you two distinct flavors and textures since it contains two different types of meat. T-bones are tenderloin and strip steak in one. So, it will be able to satisfy and please your palate.

These are the cuts of steaks you should try if you are craving great steak. You will undoubtedly not regret it if you choose from these options. The only thing left to do is order one from your favorite restaurant and tell them the doneness level you want it to have—whether it is rare, medium rare or well done.
