Ways To Stay Safe When Walking At Night

If you’re like most people, you park your car in the lot and walk into the building when you go to the mall. You may not give a second thought to the parking lot’s security. After all, it’s a public place, and as long as you don’t leave anything valuable in your car, you should be fine.

In today’s world, we are constantly being told to be aware of our surroundings and take precautions to protect ourselves from potential danger. Unfortunately, no matter how cautious we are, there are always those looking to take advantage of the situation. This is especially true in parking lots, where criminals know that people are usually alone and vulnerable.

Here are some tips to help you stay safe in parking lots:

  • Be aware of your surroundings. When you’re walking to your car, take a look around and be mindful of your surroundings. Trust your gut if you see anything suspicious and walk the other way.
  • Park in a well-lit area. If possible, park in a spot that’s well lit and close to the entrance of the store or building you’re going to. This will help you feel more secure when walking to your car.
  • Don’t leave anything valuable in your car. If you must leave something in your vehicle, make sure it’s hidden from view and out of reach of potential thieves.
  • Keep your car keys in your hand. When you’re walking to your car, have your keys ready to get in quickly. This will also help deter potential thieves.
  • Lock your doors as soon as you get in the car. Once you’re in your car, take a moment to lock the doors. This will help keep you safe if someone tries to carjack you or break into your vehicle.
  • Be extra cautious when backing out. When you’re leaving the parking lot, check for pedestrians and other cars before you start backing up.

If you are assaulted in a parking lot, the best thing to do is to try and get away as quickly as possible. If you can, get into your car and drive to a safe place. If you can’t get to your car or the assailant is blocking your way, try to attract attention by screaming or honking your horn. You can also try to flag down a passing car or pedestrian.

If you cannot get away or the assailant demands your money or possessions, it’s essential to remain calm and try not to antagonize the situation. Give the assailant what they want and then try to remember as many details about them as possible. Once you’re safe, you should do the following:

Get Medical Attention.

Even if you don’t think you’re injured, it’s essential to get checked out by a medical professional. Some injuries, such as internal bleeding, may not be immediately apparent.

Take Pictures and Keep Evidence.

If you have any visible injuries, be sure to take pictures of them. You should also save any clothing you were wearing at the time of the assault. This can be used as evidence if you decide to press charges.
