Want To Work With Your Hands? Consider These Careers

January 13, 2019

Do you love to work with your hands? Many people do. Choosing a career which allows to actually make something tangible can be very attractive. You’ll feel like you’re being productive – much more so than sitting in an office taking phone calls or typing memos. Your accomplishments and skills will also be there for everyone to see and enjoy. This can give you a buzz that sitting behind a desk never can.

Although there are fewer manual occupations than there used to be thanks to modern technology, lots of jobs are still available which need humans to get their hands dirty. Here are some of the best choices for you so you can make a well informed choice about possible career paths which could suit you.

Carpentry

Cabinets, roofs, walls, doors and furniture all started life as wood. It’s up to a carpenter to take the wood, measure it, cut it, shape it and assemble it, then add the finishing touches to bring it to life. There aren’t any formal requirements in terms of qualifications to work as a carpenter. Often, on-the-job training or an apprenticeship is the way forward. As long as you have an interest in woodwork you could be an ideal candidate for this role.

Baker Or Chef

Do you love working with your hands and cooking? Then a career as a chef or baker is ideal for you. You can cook, season, slice and chop ingredients to produce delicious food or knead, measure, decorate and shape cakes, cookies, pastries and breads to sell grateful buyers. Delicious! Usually, you can get a cooking qualification at college, however you may be able to train on the job too.

Electrician

Do you enjoy tinkering with gadgets? Are you never happier than when repairing electrical items around their home? If so, being an electrician could be the right job for you. An electrician will install, repair and maintain power systems and power lines for both businesses and homes. Technical school or an apprenticeship is the best way to get into this career path, and most states will require you to be licensed before you’re allowed to operate.

Hairstylist

Do you love playing with hair? Are you always trying out different hairstyles on your friends? A career as a hairstylist could be calling you! Hairstyling is an art, involving washing, coloring, cutting and styling hair to suit the client’s requirements. You’ll need to be licensed and will need to complete an accredited cosmetology or barber program as well as pass a state examination.

Mechanic

Fixing cars is a great career path. Not only can you command an attractive salary, you’ll also have a valuable skill that will save you and your family a lot of money. Mechanics do everything from changing tires and the oil to repairing and diagnosing major problems. You’ll need to go to technical school and obtain industry certification in order to take on this role.

Welder

An exciting and unusual choice of career path, welding involves using torches to repair or create metal structures and objects. There are several types of welding which you can learn and welders have the opportunity of working in several different sectors including shipbuilding and construction. Some may even work under the water to make repairs on pipelines and offshore oil rigs. To become a welder, you’ll need to graduate high school and then receive training on the job or at a technical school. You’ll also need to make sure that you’ve thought about all the safety requirements for welding such as appropriate clothing and a helmet to protect your eyes.

You can see that there is no shortage when it comes to exciting jobs that you can do that require you to get your hands dirty. Whether you want to work with cars, electricity, metal or hair, you’ll have a world of opportunity at your fingertips.

If you’re interested in embarking on a career in a manual occupation, you should make sure to do your research well first to make sure you know all of the different options open to you. The perfect job for you could be something that you had never considered before!
