Tips for Beachgoers Who Don’t Want to Splash in the Waves

Time spent at the beach often means spending time splashing around in the waves. You might be sitting on the shore as the waves crash on your feet, you might go in deep and jump over the waves, or you may want to swim along the shore, but what if you don’t want to do any of those things?

Just because you don’t want to get wet doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go to the beach! Whether you’re spending time with family in Myrtle Beach, SC or you’re gazing at the waves in California, swimming is a popular beach pastime. However, there is plenty more to do if you aren’t in the mood to get wet.

Build a Sandcastle

Laying out in the sun is always an option. It’s a great way to get a little vitamin D and get a little bit of a tan, but if you’re getting bored of just lying there, consider doing something else in the sand instead.

Building sandcastles isn’t just for kids! With the right tools and techniques, you can build something spectacular. Get the whole family involved and see what you can come up with.

Many beaches host castle-building competitions. You can participate and build a sandcastle of your own, but it’s also just as much fun to walk along the beach and see the amazing creations contest participants have built.

Collect Shells

Walking on the beach is a popular pastime, and it doesn’t have to involve getting your feet wet. You can walk along the shore at sunrise or sunset, and you can even hop on a bicycle!

While you’re moseying along the beach, make things more interesting by collecting shells. You can be very serious about your shell collecting and spend the entire day searching for the perfect one, or you can be more informal about it and simply glance at your feet as you comb the beach on your way back to the hotel.

Don’t stop at shells! There are many other things to find on the beach. Other critters, like sand dollars and starfish, are exciting finds. You can help the environment by picking up garbage or find buried treasure by bringing along a metal detector.

Go Fishing

There’s nothing quite like surf fishing! It does take some practice and special equipment since rods need to be long and lines even longer, but it can be a lot of fun for the person who wants to spend time on the beach without getting too wet. The redfish is a popular angling fish. The striped bass is also coveted on the East Coast.

You don’t have to stay on the shore if you want to do a little fishing. Consider chartering a boat to take you into slightly deeper waters. You can cast your line the traditional way or just go along for the ride. Either way, you’ll enjoy the water without getting really wet.

Play an Outdoor Game

It doesn’t matter if you have spent all day next to the waves, or your entire vacation has included time spent on the sand, it’s normal to get bored. Spice things up with an outdoor game!

Some unique outdoor beach game ideas include:

  • Spikeball, which is like a more compact version of volleyball.
  • TidalBall is the combination of cornhole and bocce ball.
  • BucketBall is like beer pong for the beach.
  • Jazzminton is like an easier version of badminton.

You don’t have to have a fancy, exciting new game in order to have a little fun on the beach. Bring along a frisbee or a football and play a game of catch, or ask someone else on the beach if you can join their game.

Read a Book

If you’re hanging out with the kids and need a little bit of a break, you can’t beat bringing along a book. You just have to be careful. You don’t want your book to get wet on the beach!

A waterproof E-reader is a must, as is getting a waterproof sleeve or large Ziploc bag for your traditional book. When you’re ready to do some reading, pull your chair back from the shore so you don’t have to worry about splashing.

Reading not really your thing? Consider listening to an audio book instead!

Just because you aren’t really in the mood to get wet doesn’t mean you should avoid the beach. There are tons of things to do at the beach that don’t involve you getting in your swimming suit and jumping in the waves!
