I began working with the AMFund around 3 years ago, a fundraising group who do so much incredible and helpful work. Since I began working there my mentality towards helping others has radically changed and I now look for opportunities to help people, something which I was guilty of not always doing in the past. There are so many reasons as to why we should do what we can to help those in need and whether that means donating to cause which you care about , helping those in your local community or giving up your own time to make a difference, it is essential that we try to do our best to meet those needs.
Ask yourself honestly how helpful you are to others, a little? A lot? Either way it is something important for us all to do and here is exactly why.
Because We Can
I often think about how children are when they see someone in need of some help, if they are able to help the other person out then they will do it, no questions asked. As we get older however we can become very self-centered and we weigh up the pros and cons of helping others. The reason why children are that way is simply because they can, and if you have it within your power to help someone then you should do it purely and simply for that reason, because you are able to.
Works Both Ways
Imagine if you were on the other side of the fence, imagine you lost your job and fell on hard times, wouldn’t you like it if a member of the community helped you to buy some groceries? Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a charity supported by the public who stepped up to help you care for your kids? The answer is of course yes, so why not be that person for someone else who has fallen on hard times and needs support? It could happen to you, and if it does you will be happy with that support, just as the person who you can help will be.
Togetherness
One thing which we have lost in the last few decades is our empathy for our own community, we have lost that community spirit whereby people could rely on each other for help and support. If you are able to be selfless and to help those within your community then you can be a part of reversing that trend and tightening up the communities which we need so much.
Contagious
If someone helps you when you need it most you are going to very likely to wish to repay the favor to someone in the future. Helping people is contagious and the more that you do it, the more people who are going to go on and do it at some point in time, and the person that they help will in turn repay the favor. This creates a beautiful domino effect of people helping each other.
