Americans love their cars. Approximately 91% of American households have a car. Many might believe that this out of pure necessity. However, there is more to this than just having a car.
Many American households own at least two cars. One for necessity while the other is meant for particular hobbies like racing. Some enjoy buying a broken-down car and restore it to its former glory. At the same time, some enjoy collecting vehicles from a bygone era. There is just something about cars that connect to Americans.
The US, after all, is the second country that produces the most cars in the world. The first is China, but this is primarily attributed to its huge population. So why do Americans love cars so much? And what’s the joy they get from such a materialistic thing? Here are some reasons why getting a car is enjoyable and, at some point, therapeutic for your mental health.
Cars Are Part of Our Daily Lives
Can you remember a day when you have not seen a singular car on the street? No? Well, that’s because cars are part of our daily lives. They are there wherever we go, and they are connected to us as much as they are connected to us.
Driving can actually be therapeutic. It can help us sleep better at night, and it can make us think more clearly. Cars can also make us appreciate things, even learn how to love them. It doesn’t make us any more materialistic, but more appreciative of the things we have.
Ultimately, our cars are a part of our lives, and there are no two ways about it. Seeing our beloved car break down worries us. It can even make us sad. We are connected to these things, and they reward us the best way they can.
The Achievement of Fixing an Old Car
We all know how rare Subaru cars nowadays. If you own one, you know how hard it is to find a repair shop that offers Subaru timing belt service. It’s one of the rarest services out there simply because no one owns this particular car brand anymore. But there is something to be had in fixing old cars. A mental state of mind that is almost close to being euphoric.
For gearheads out there, you know what I’m talking about. Being able to find old parts to fix our vintage cars elates us with pure joy. Finding a mechanic that can fix our old cars can almost make us jump in joy. There is a sense of pride and achievement in these things, and we love it. We love our cars, we certainly do, and we want to restore them the best way we can.
Cars Help Us Connect with Others
Remember that one time you visited a car park? Or that time you and your family drove into a drive-in cinema? You might have found one or two strangers who might have complimented your vehicle. These stranger might have turned into your friend overnight, all because they like what you are riding.
Cars help us connect. Carpools are another prime example of this. Although it’s rare nowadays because of the pandemic, our children used to spend many fun days in their carpools.
Cars are part of our social lives. Millions of Americans watch NASCAR and other racing programs. Millions of Americans love talking about cars. It is in our genes to love these things.
Cars Represent Our Growth
As new cars are released into the public, more slick and beautiful than the ones that came before, the more we become in awe at the things we can make as a species. At some point, cars talk about the creativity of humankind. Many years ago, we can barely make one of these things run. But now we have found ways to make cars drive themselves. Years ago, we might have trouble finding our way to a particular city. But now we know these cities like the back of our hand through the use of GPS.
Our innovative minds are integrated with the vehicles we make. They show us our growth and our creativity and what we can do when we work together.
Cars have brought us closer than we think. During these modern times, we can’t imagine a time when we would lose access to our vehicles. We would probably go insane. So be thankful and appreciative of your car and take care of it like your own.
