How to Teach a Kid to Skateboard or Ride a Scooter?

May 11, 2020

Parents are always very excited to teach new activities to their children and as the passing years, they introduce new things step by step. So when it comes to skateboarding or scootering, they are very excited to do it together with their children. But one thing should be in your mind that it should not be started before 5 years of age without very close monitoring. This is to prevent injury since children younger than 5 do not have the necessary development to support the impact of falls.

After children 5 years or older, if you are thinking of surprising your kid with a skateboard, then go for one of these kids skateboards; they will enjoy riding it around and they can turn it into a lifelong skill.

How to Learn How to Ride a Longboard

  • You should start practicing the skateboard on a carpet or grass surface so that your child feels safe while they get used to the movement of your body.
  • Be sure to ask your child which foot forward is most comfortable; don’t assume you know because it may be different than their dominant hand.
  • Let them move slowly in the forward direction while holding your hand and then leave them slowly so that they do it themselves.
  • Tell your child to move forward and backward on the skateboard by using their heels and toes while keeping the knees bent.
  • Their foot should be near to the bolt of the truck and let them jump on and off a couple of times.
  • Make sure that your child wears protective gear, including helmet, elbow pad, and kneepad. So that they can enjoy their activities without being afraid of falling down. They will learn faster this way.

Tips for Making Riding Skateboards Easier

  • As with skateboarding, be sure to have the necessary protective helmet and pads.
  • If you are using an electric scooter for kids, be sure to fully charge the machine.
  • Be sure to choose a place to practice where there is little to no traffic.
  • Make sure your child is familiar with the sensitivity of the brakes.
  • Give a proper demonstration to your child on how to start, stop, and turn.

Tips for Choosing Kids Scooter and Skateboard:

  • When choosing a kids scooter and skateboard the first thing you should keep in mind is the comfortability and security of your child.
  • The size of the scooter or skateboard should be not too big nor too small, so choose the size appropriate for your child’s age and weight.

Conclusion

Parents are always very concerned about their children’s activities so when your child starts riding a scooter or skateboard you have to be patient as every child is different, some learn very fast while others take time. Teach your child how to balance while staying calm and relaxed. Both skateboarding and scootering are great activities for kids to encourage physical fitness and fine control of motor skills, so go out and have fun!
