When prom fever starts, it’s time to start shopping! From your dress to your jewelry, to how you will do your hair and your makeup, there are so many decisions to make for prom that it can be easy to forget one small–but significant–detail: your shoes!
Since the most popular prom dress styles are full-length, most prom shoes won’t actually get that much attention since the dress will be hiding them, but that’s no reason to forget about them! New prom dresses have much more exciting hemlines or lengths, which means your shoes may get a starring role in the evening.
Your prom shoes aren’t just about looks, though. They have an essential role to play when it comes to keeping you comfortable all day. Prom is a long day that often starts early in the morning and goes to the wee hours of the night, making sure you invest wisely in your shoes will mean that you get to enjoy the whole day without discomfort.
If you’re starting to shop for your prom shoes, here are a few tips on finding the perfect shoes for that special evening:
Start early
Once you’ve chosen your prom dress, it’s time to start shopping for your shoes. While this may seem early, JJ’s House designer Jessica assures us that earlier is better when it comes to shoes shopping.
“The rule is dress first, shoes second, everything else after,” she says. Buying your shoes early will give you the best selection in most sizes and will also give you time to wear your shoes around your home and break them in before you have to wear them all.
Shop in the evening
Shoe shopping in the evening has nothing to do with selection or price and everything to do with how your feet are going to be behaving. From the time you get up in the morning to the time you go to bed, your feet will be different sizes. This is because as you stand all day, your feet swell. By buying your prom shoes when your feet are a bit swollen, you’ll be able to get a better fit in a heel that will accommodate any swelling that happens during prom.
Style and comfort both matter
While we’re not suggesting you wear Crocs to prom, your shoe’s comfort level matters a lot. Don’t buy shoes based only on how they look or how cheap they are. Instead, look at your prom shoes as an investment. If you spend more on your shoes, you will be more comfortable in them all day and will also be able to wear them for another event later on, maybe in your freshman year of university.
Consider two pairs of shoes
By the end of the night at any dancing event, most girls have gotten conspicuously shorter. This is because most of the high heels will have been kicked off into a corner by that point due to aching feet. If you want to avoid this, consider buying a pair of shoes only for dancing. These can have a lower heel and be more comfortable overall, but still keep you from sliding around in your bare feet. If you’re worried about cost, consider looking for cheap prom dresses online to save on price so you can redirect some of that money to the second pair of shoes.
