People in relationships often think the phrase “relationships are complicated” only applies to other couples. Their relationship is in excellent condition and always will be.

It doesn’t take long to find out that this isn’t true. Every relationship has highs and lows. When the lows come, it’s essential to know how to stay emotionally connected in a relationship.

Emotional distance can wreak havoc on a relationship. If a spouse feels disconnected from the other, they sometimes feel isolated. Sometimes, they may act in irrational ways.

Reopen The Channels Of Communication

If you’re the one feeling distant, explain your feelings to your spouse. However, try to be careful with your words. Don’t start accusing them of wronging you, or else they may think, “my husband hates me!”

Find Ways To Connect

Fixing emotional distance in a relationship doesn’t happen in one conversation. Instead, it often helps to find shared activities to bring yourselves closer together.

This activity can take several forms. Maybe you can go on walks together, or play video/board games. These activities often invite conversation and fun times, allowing you to bridge the gap and make new memories.

Pay Attention To Love Languages

Love languages are the way in which we express and receive love. Sometimes, couples have contrasting love languages. In these scenarios, each partner has to work on speaking the other’s love language as much as possible.

Remain Patient

If both parties feel emotionally distant, they may have differing levels of concern about the problem. Just because you want to work on the problem now doesn’t mean your significant other feels the same way yet.

If so, don’t worry. Everybody works through these issues in their own time. Be patient as your loved one goes through their troubles.

Seek Counseling For Emotional Distance

Each of these tips can help bridge emotional distance. However, sometimes you need an outside perspective to help you grow. Consider seeing a couple’s counselor with your partner if you both struggle to bridge the gap.
