Are you off to New Jersey for a special occasion? Bachelorette party, birthday, graduation celebration? It is a great destination and you are sure to have a fabulous time. Here are eight tips to help you experience New Jersey nightlife and make wonderful memories.
Ditch the Jersey Shore Assumptions
The party-hard anti-intellectual show has brought some unhappiness to the entrepreneurs and businessmen of New Jersey, as they find themselves condescended to or patronized by those who assume that everyone in New Jersey is like that. It’s a little like assuming everyone in Sicily is in the mob: they don’t like it, it’s not true, and you might find you don’t get the best service after one or two ill-thought-out ‘guido’ jokes…
Watch out for the Gulls
If you are enjoying fries on the boardwalk, keep an eye on the gulls. They are bigger than you might think, greedy for anything that looks or smells and good, and they are almost completely fearless, helping themselves to fries, ice creams, hot-dogs and all the good things!
Parking is Expensive
Do be warned that New Jersey is quite a packed placed and parking is at a premium. If you are in your own car, you will, firstly, struggle to find a place to park, and secondly, might find the parking charges somewhere between eye-watering and obscene! A much better option is to hire a limo for the night, which will be able to drop you off and pick you up outside your destination, the driver then heading off to find a good place to wait for you. NJ limos are less pricy than you might think, and they offer so much in the way of comfort, style and convenience!
Try the Shops
Even though you are there for the nightlife, do make time for a spot of retail therapy too. New Jersey is packed with fabulous retail opportunities where you can find everything from a cute outfit for the evening to a designer handbag so beautiful you will hardly want to use it.
Rooftop bar
New Jersey is packed with rooftop bars, and for good reason. The area offers amazing views over the water to New York, to Atlantic City and even over the Boardwalk itself: no matter which direction you face, you will be able to enjoy and photograph some of the most glorious views that you’ve ever seen!
Have a Flutter
While Las Vegas is the gambling capital of the USA – if not the whole world – New Jersey is no slouch when it comes to slot machines, card tables and roulette wheels. Make a point of trying your luck at a few of the games of chance and who knows: you might get lucky!
Bring Cash
Despite the fact that we are slowly moving towards a cash-free economy, New Jersey nightlife is still very much a cash-based economy. Trying to find a fee-free ATM is hard enough and on a busy night out, you might spend as much as an hour in the queue, waiting for your turn to withdraw some money. It is also a good idea to only carry as much cash with you as you are prepared to lose in the casino: it’s a great method of self-regulation to prevent accidental overspends!
Use Walkways: Especially After Dark
New Jersey has a positive network of brightly lit walkways that led you through the casino and nightclub areas. Use these when you are walking about, especially in small groups or alone, as it is much safer than the dark, shadowy places below the boardwalk! The walkways are fantastic: clean, easy to walk on, even in heels, and have the added advantage of making it very hard to get lost in!
