6 Genius Photography Hacks Every Photographer Needs to Know

July 27, 2020

Looking for clever ways to enhance your photography skills? Then read on to discover the most brilliant photography hacks here.

Are you looking for ways to provide an uptick on your photography skills? Perhaps you just want a clever trick or two to set your photos apart from the rest.

While many of these tricks come with time and discovering your preference, there are some universal photography hacks that you can add to the mix.

These hacks will differentiate your photos and force people to do double-takes of them whenever they come across them on your website, social media, etc.

Be sure to see below for several helpful photography hacks that you can use to benefit yourself and your clientele moving forward!

1. Build Your Own Lightbox

Lightboxes are often used by professional photographers as a way of enhancing the detail of the object in the picture. While you might want the perks of a lightbox, you might not be willing to pay full price for one.

Fortunately, one of the best DIY photography lighting hacks involves creating a DIY lightbox for you to use. You only need two items: one sheet of printer paper and tape.

Simply find a window with the right amount of natural lighting, then tape the sheet of paper on it. From there, simply place your object in front of the paper. For better results, you can switch your camera to Av mode for a more detailed photo.

2. Install Lightroom Presets

Many photographers depend heavily on Adobe Lightroom. It’s become the handiest and popular editing software for professional photography, helping you alter your pictures however you so choose.

However, it can be tedious for you to open Adobe Lightroom and go through the same monotonous tasks to touch up all photos the same way. Fortunately, you can learn how to install lightroom presets to cut that time down significantly.

Be sure to pay attention to specific details, as there are several different steps to follow according to the version of Lightroom that you have. From this day forward, you’ll be able to apply the same settings to a batch of photos with just the click of a button!

3. Opt for ISO Over Flash

Many camera manufacturers program their cameras to pop up the flash even if the area gets slightly dark. The only problem is that the flash can make an otherwise amazing photo appear blurry.

Many photographers, especially beginners, lean too heavily on the camera’s default programming. However, you might experience better photos when you finally decide to turn the flash off and increase your ISO instead.

Creating an uptick in ISO will help you capture all the people in your photo while they’re frozen in place. It will reduce the amount of blur, thus making a higher quality picture for you to enjoy.

Turning off the flash will also help you avoid the dreaded dark background and shiny eyes. By opting for ISO over flash, your photos will start to look more organic and enticing!

4. Hazy Photos Hack

One of the biggest trends in the photography world right now is the use of hazy pictures. They give off a mysterious and sophisticated feel that viewers are falling in love with.

While you might have thought it would take expensive staging equipment to add hazy pictures to your repertoire, all it takes is a sandwich bag.

You simply place the clear sandwich bag over the lens of your camera, ensuring that the bottom of the bag is covering your camera’s lens. Just make sure no wrinkles are in the way of the shot, and you’ll have a hazy picture for you and your client to enjoy!

5. Switch Up the Viewpoint

Too many photos are taken from the eye line of the photographer. This can cause a monotonous theme in your photography that will seem unappealing to your clientele.

Nothing switches up your portfolio quite like taking pictures from different angles and viewpoints. It lets viewers see the beauty of the object from a different point of view.

Try to think of different angles that you can incorporate in your photoshoots. Even if your client isn’t asking for new viewpoints, take one or two of them and see if they like the result.

As a plus, this will go a long way towards showing off your skills for future clients down the line. Since your portfolio will contain different angles, clients will get the impression that you’re innovative and daring with your photography.

6. DIY Bounce Flash

Many photographers elect not to use their camera’s flash at all due to it having a distasteful effect when the flash is pointed directly at their subject.

That problem can be solved with a way to bounce the flash. Lucky for you, all you need to do is a business card and a pair of scissors!

Simply pop up the flash and mark down the two areas where the arms of the flash connect to the camera. Cut out slits in the business card so that they can attach to the flash.

Once attached, the business card will act as a way to redirect the flash so that it isn’t aiming directly at your object anymore!

Use These Photography Hacks to Your Advantage

Now that you’ve seen these photography hacks, it’s clear that there are several ways to heighten your skills without breaking the bank.

Be sure to try out each of these hacks and see which ones work best for you. If nothing else, they’ll help you mix up your portfolio, which is always a good thing!
