Buying used products is great both for your wallet and the environment. Learn about five items you should always buy second-hand and why.
You’ve taken measures to save money — you’ve created a budget, cut down on your food costs, and pay off your credit card bills on time. But how else can you save money?
Buy second-hand.
Thrifting is an excellent way to save money. It’s not only good for your wallet, but it’s also good for the environment too. Here are 5 things you should always buy second-hand.
1. Clothing
Thrift stores and consignment shops, contrary to popular belief, is a cost-effective and safe way to get new clothes. Thrift stores often get designer clothing brands by donation that you can get purchase for more than half off of the original retail price.
By buying second-hand clothes is an eco-friendly and budget-friendly way to go.
2. Cars
Did you know that new cars depreciate in value by 40% three years after purchase? The rate at which new cars lose value and the amount you have to pay (upfront and in monthly payments) make used and certified pre-owned (CPO) cars an appealing option.
Used and CPO cars can be bought outright so you don’t need to worry about paying off a loan. The downsides of buying a used car are limited warranties and repair costs. However, this is your best bet if you can’t afford to finance a new car or aren’t looking for anything fancy.
3. Textbooks
If you’re a college student, you know how expensive it is to buy new textbooks. Instead of paying hundreds of dollars for a single book your professor only requires you to use one, it’s better to buy cheap textbooks. You can buy textbooks for cheap and even sell them back for a similar value when you’re done using it.
4. Furniture
New furniture is expensive. If you want brand new matching pieces for your living room, you could be spending thousands on a set. Used furniture is a perfectly good option to save money.
Look around at yard sales, estate sales, consignment shops, and thrift stores for used furniture. You can find many great almost-new pieces. However, you probably want to stay away from items such as cribs, mattresses, and heavily used upholstered furniture.
5. Books
New books are often over 20 or 30 dollars before they become paperbacks. However, you can save money on new (or old) books by buying them used. Libraries often have shelves where they sell books they could not add to their collection for less than 5 dollars each.
There are also many used book websites to choose from. Better World Books sells used books of every genre and type. For every book someone buys, they donate a book to someone in need. You can fill your bookshelf and bookshelves around the world.
These Are the Best Items to Buy Second-Hand
Clothes, cars, textbooks, furniture, and books are among the best things to buy used. When you buy second-hand items, you benefit your budget, the environment, and even other people in the world.
