In a world of fashion, there are oceans of boutiques, department stores and thrift shops all packed with clothes from trends of the past and present. But how do we search through mountains of clothes to find the fashion trends of the future? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Below is a list of all the hottest trends for the spring of 2019, curated by the biggest names in the fashion industry.
Get Ready to Burn Rubber! (Or Wear It)
Yes, you read that headline correctly. Rubber isn’t just for tires anymore–it’s a fashion statement. Calvin Klein released a rubber pencil skirt, while other designer brands are emphasizing a rubber, rain-coat style jacket. But, it doesn’t stop with clothes. According to Elle magazine, Balenciaga released a rubber purse and, wait for it, a pair of platform crocs. It doesn’t get much better than that!
A similar, perhaps more reasonably priced rubber trend, is the return of Jelly Sandals. Popular in their nineties, they’re riding the wave of this new rubber fad. In fact, on Glamor Magazine’s list of 2019’s Shoe Trends, sandals with rubber straps are at the top of their list. You can find them in common stores such as Target or Walmart.
Ruching and Ruffles
We simply can’t go any further in an article about 2019 fashion trends without talking about ruched and ruffled clothes. Along every major runway during fashion week, models were adorned in ruched dresses and ruffled sleeves. While these are two different design styles, their similarities make it obvious why they became trendy at the same time.
Ruching involves bunching up the fabric in strategic places, so the material accentuates the unique curves of a variety of body types. Harper’s Bazaar called this trend a much more forgiving and romantic take on a body-con.
Ruffles also involve bunching up fabric, but instead of clinging to the body’s form, they extend outward, adding volume and beauty to any outfit. On the runway, models flaunt ruffles because they hide certain parts of the body, while providing the clothes with a nice texture.
Asymmetrical Necklines and the “Cold Shoulder”
Asymmetrical necklines are a great design choice that elevates a typical, monocolor top into a fashion statement. So it’s a good thing the 2019 spring fashion trends are bringing them back. This style offers an unlimited number of choices.
A popular choice is what Cosmo calls ‘one cold shoulder.’ Basically, one shoulder is covered while the other is bare. The variation in the necklines adds something unique and fun while still allowing for modesty.
The Fanny Pack
Yes, this glorious accessory from the nineties is back. And thank goodness–it’s just so convenient! Not only is it a hands-free way to carry your essential items, it’s also a statement piece. It defies the convention of “nerd” and embraces what was previously shunned. Now, brands like Kate Spade, Marc Jacobs and even Gucci are profiting from this new trend. When convenience and high-end fashion fuse together, we get designer fanny packs.
Suit Yourself!
We’ve all seen the pictures of female politicians standing tall while wearing an all-white suit. No matter which side of the political spectrum you’re on, women from both sides can rock a head-to-toe white suit. And it’s not just politicians–the trend of wearing fashionable suits for women has bled over to the world of fashion and celebrity.
Taylor Swift and Kim Kardashian rocked the runway in all-white suits. Of course, not every woman can handle wearing clothes that are entirely white (marinara sauce, anyone?), so if you want to pull off the 2019 spring suit trend, consider an all neutral outfit featuring beiges and browns. Many fashion sources declare neutral colors the new neon.
Leotards
While this trend isn’t brand new, it’s facing a resurgence in the early months of 2019: leotards. You can hardly walk into a FOREVER 21 without finding a few dozen leotards. They’re great for showing off your figure, and can be worn on their own or under a pair of jeans or leggings. Tired of your shirt coming untucked? This fashion trend could be a solution to your problems!
Jeans, Jeans, Jeans
You’ve heard the old adage, “never pair denim with denim,” right? Well, kiss that style convention goodbye. According to Stitch Fix, pairing a light denim jacket with darker jeans creates a cute contrast, even if the materials are the same.
Embroidered and embellished jeans are also making a comeback. Designers are beginning to incorporate gems and other embroidery around the hem and pockets of new jeans. While it sounds very 90s, models on the runway absolutely rock the new design. Although, some of us just need to do a little closet-digging to find our old favorite pair of bedazzled denim.
Fashion is constantly evolving to reflect the needs and styles of the current culture. Here we discussed some of the newest trends for the spring of 2019. A lot of 90s styles are being resurrected, all with a modern flare. Still, there are some brand new trends, unique to our time, that are emerging as well. It’ll be interesting to explore those trends as 2019 continues.
