Should You Clean Your Dryer Vent Yourself?

May 6, 2022

Did you know that there are roughly 2,900 fires related to clothes dryers each year? If you want to avoid becoming part of this problem, you need to clean your dryer vents regularly. But using the right cleaning process can be tricky for the average person.

Read on to learn whether DIY dryer vent cleaning is a good idea!

Understand How Often to Clean Dryer Vent Systems

Without regular cleaning, your dryer won’t be able to get rid of hot air. This causes the hot air to build up inside the ductwork, and that can result in an overheated dryer. Your risk of a dangerous fire goes up!

Commit to cleaning dryer vent systems at least once each year. If you have a large family, however, you may need to clean more frequently.

You may get some signals that your dryer ducts are dirty. If your clothes aren’t very dry after a cycle in the dryer or they smell strange, it may be time for a cleaning!

Size Up Your Dryer Vents

Are your dryer vents easy or difficult to access? Rooftop vents or long, extensive systems may pose more of a challenge. And you don’t want to risk injury trying to access them.

If you try to clean the vents using a brush, you also risk pushing more lint together to create a total blockage. Shorter ducts that are under 7 feet, however, could make a DIY cleaning option more realistic.

Consider DIY Dryer Vent Cleaning

If you’re on a budget, the prospect of doing the work may sound appealing. The key advantage of the DIY method is that you can get a kit for under $50.

Typically, a dryer vent cleaning kit contains a few brushes and a vacuum attachment. These will provide enough suction or abrasion to snag lint deposits. Follow the instructions and be sure to wear a dust mask during the cleaning process.

You’ll need to inspect the ductwork for leaks, too. Use heat-resistant tape to seal them up. Avoid using leaf blowers or other household equipment to clean ducts since they may create too much pressure or suction.

Know When to Get Professional Dryer Vent Cleaning

A professional cleaning service will have the tools and know-how to remove debris. You may pay up to $150 for this service, but you’ll save yourself time. You also won’t risk damaging your vents by improperly using a DIY kit.

Additionally, a professional dryer vent cleaning service will have industrial-strength equipment and the right safety gear. Their spinning brushes and vacuums can navigate ductwork systems with lots of bends. They’ll be able to notice leaks and other indications of damage in your vents, too.

Keep Your Dryer Vents Clean

If your ductwork is limited and manageable, DIY dryer vent cleaning can make sense. But if you have long and inaccessible vents, a dryer vent cleaning service makes more sense. Determine your budget and needs, and plan on doing an annual cleaning.
