October 21, 2022

Electric Technician Job. Caucasian Professional Electrician in His 30s Finishing Electric Box Inside the Apartment.

Are you looking to have electrical work done in your home?

You need an electrician for different services, such as lights or appliances. But, there are various electricians, each offering specific skills and knowledge.

What type of electrician do you need? There are residential and commercial electricians. Of course, there are some with a bit of both, but in essence, there are two types.

So, what are the differences between a residential vs commercial electrician? Read on to learn more!

What Does a Commercial Electrician Do?

A commercial electrician is someone who works in a commercial setting. It could be in an office, retail store, or apartment complex. They install and repair electrical systems in commercial buildings.

What Does a Residential Electrician Do?

A homeowner needs a residential electrician to handle electrical repairs, installations, and maintenance. They trained and got a license to work on home electrical systems.

Like commercial electricians, they can understand the electrical code. They can also install, repair, and maintain your power system.

The Differences Between Residential vs Commercial Electricians

There are many differences between a residential electrician vs commercial electrician. Here are some of their notable differences:

Types of Building They Work On

Commercial electricians work on larger projects. This includes office buildings, warehouses, and retail stores.

Meanwhile, residential electricians work on smaller projects. These projects include homes, apartments, and townhouses.

Level of Education

A commercial electrician must have a higher level of education. They must finish a four-year degree to be able to work in this field.

Moreover, they must complete an apprenticeship program for up to four years. And they should pass a test administered by the National Electricians Association.

Meanwhile, residential electricians may only need a two-year degree. They could also get certificates from a vocational school.

Experience

When it comes to experience, commercial electricians tend to have more because of their intensive training and education. Most of the time, electricians start to work in a residential setting. But later on, as they gained more experience, they had a transition to a commercial electrician.

Salary

Commercial electricians tend to make more per hour than their residential counterparts. It is because commercial electricians have more experience and training than residential electricians.

Additionally, commercial electricians work longer hours than residential electricians. They also work in more dangerous and challenging environments, with higher pay.

Which One Should You Hire?

You can hire a residential or commercial electrician if you need electrical services. Both work with electrical wiring, but they differ in the scale of their projects.

Consider your project and budget when deciding between a residential vs commercial electrician. If you need major electrical work, it’s best to hire a commercial electrician.

But a residential electrician may be a better option if you need something more minor. No matter which type of electrician you choose, you can be sure they can handle your project well.
