Repair or Upgrade to a High-Efficiency Furnace

September 8, 2020

When you wake up on a cold morning and crank up the thermostat on your furnace and nothing happens, when you call on your contractor for heating repairs, you find that the cost will be very high since the problem is not as simple as you initially thought. Do you go ahead with the furnace repair calgary or purchase a new one?

Repair or Upgrade to a High-Efficiency Furnace - My ZeoThis is often a big question, especially when repair costs are almost the same as the cost of purchasing a new appliance. If you find yourself in this situation, this is how to decide:

1. Think about the safety of your home

The safety of your home should be one of your primary concerns. If the furnace’s problem presents itself as a safety hazard, you shouldn’t think twice about replacing it. You don’t want to risk your health or safety if you’re experiencing problems such as carbon monoxide gas release. You will be risking your life if you don’t change your system.

2. Consider the lifespan

Consider the lifespan of your system. These systems typically run efficiently for up to 20 years with proper maintenance. However, some can run even longer than that. Check to see the average lifespan of the model that you have installed in your home. You can use these numbers as a guideline on whether to discard the old system or repair it.

3. Compare the cost of repairing to that of replacing the system

What are the costs involved in purchasing and installing a new furnace? Be sure to consider the cost of transport and installation of the system as well. Many people forget the added costs and find that although the actual system costs less than repairing the old system, the total cost includes installation.

If you didn’t afford to replace the system, you would be better off having it repaired. Be sure to carry out regular maintenance and cleaning to ensure that it is running efficiently.

4. Efficiency

The system’s efficiency plays a major role in ensuring that the system doesn’t cost you too much in running it. If your system is inefficient, your energy costs will be higher. Old systems are less efficient e.g., a system that is 20 years old will have an efficiency of about 70%, while a new one will be as high as 95%. This will result in a 25% savings in your bills. Therefore, you will save money in the long run by having your system replaced rather than having it repaired.

It is worth thinking about the different factors that affect the cost of replacing and repairing heating systems. Be sure to take your time and consider all the factors.
