Refrigerator Not Cooling? 3 Possible Reasons

May 2, 2022

There’s nothing more panic-inducing than waking up one morning and finding a fridge full of spoiled groceries.

Fortunately, there are only so many things that could cause your refrigerator to run a bit warmer than it should. So, with the right know-how, you should be able to take care of the issue in no time.

Is your refrigerator not cooling, and you aren’t sure how to fix it? We’re here to help! Here are three potential reasons why your refrigerator isn’t cooling properly and what you can do to cool it down again.

1. It’s the Evaporator

If your fridge is running a little warm, your first move should be to check your evaporator fan and coils. Over time, your refrigerator’s evaporator coils and fan can become clogged with dust, frost, or other debris, which can prevent them from properly cooling your fridge.

Fortunately, if you’re willing to spend a little time and elbow grease on the problem, dirty or clogged evaporator coils and fans are issues you can solve on your own.

If your refrigerator’s evaporator looks a little worse for wear, try cleaning it off. If that rectifies the problem, make sure to keep a close eye on your refrigerator’s temperature. While some build-up is normal over time, an excess of frost on your evaporator could signal a more severe issue that requires professional assistance.

2. A Faulty Electrical Control Board

Once upon a time, people kept their perishables fresh in iceboxes that were powered by giant blocks of ice! These days, our refrigerators stay cold thanks to slightly more advanced technology.

Unfortunately, the downside to high-tech is that when that tech goes bad, there’s not that much you can do to fix it. Your refrigerator’s electrical control board controls the temperature of your fridge. So, if it goes haywire, odds are you won’t be able to fix the problem on your own.

If you think your refrigerator may be beyond a DIY fix, then you’ll need to call in the professionals. Need someone to come to fix your fridge? You can get appliance repair here!

3. It’s Just Too Full

How much is in your fridge right now?

If your fridge is having a hard time keeping its cool, it may be because it’s too full. If your refrigerator is packed to the rafters with leftovers and other goodies, the air inside can’t circulate properly, which means the cold air your fridge is generating simply cannot get to where your food is.

If your fridge is running a bit warm and is a little on the full side, try cleaning it out a bit and waiting a few hours to see if it cools down.

Why’s Your Refrigerator Not Cooling?

Is your refrigerator not cooling? Now you know a little bit more about what might be causing the issue and what you can do to get your icebox back to a more perishable-appropriate temperature.
