Are you looking to revamp your home?

We all want our homes to look their best, but most of us don’t know where to start when it comes to interior design. If only there was a way you could design your home like a pro?

Look no further than Interior Design 101, your ticket to a high-style home!

Build Around Your Space

Space planning is key. It’s not uncommon for people to end up with furniture that’s too big or too small for their space. Build around the space you have, and consider what furniture you actually have room for. It’s about having balance in your space, and not looking too cramped or too sparse.

For larger spaces, why not divide the room into zones for different purposes. You can have a seating area that encourages conversation, a TV area, an area for games, or even an office area with a desk. Don’t get too caught up in symmetry. It has its place, but if you focus on it too much, the space can feel forced.

You want the room to feel natural, and your statement pieces to speak for themselves. Think about the visual distribution and weight of furnishings to get a balanced look. Scale and proportion are vital to good design.

Avoid Clutter

Busy shelves and sideboards stuffed with knick-knacks make a space look cluttered. If you want to give your home a quick, stylish revamp then start with a declutter.

Precious objects and family heirlooms should go into safe storage. Or, if you don’t want to hold onto them anymore, then you can take them to an auction or a dealer. There’s good money in heirlooms, it might bring in a little extra cash.

Try moving your furniture around too. Experiment with placement and your living space. A simple rearrange can open up a cramped room and help you make the most of the space.

Once you’ve uncluttered, don’t undo it all by filling your home back up with new items. Minimal is style, but it doesn’t have to mean bare. Choose a few accent decorations that compliment your aesthetic and vibe. Less is more, and it will draw the eye and invoke interest far better.

Remain Neutral

Contemporary interiors aim to create calmness and reduce stress. The best way to start is to pick a neutral color palette. Neutral doesn’t mean no color though. Choose subdued hues to complement the neutral palette you’ve chosen.

To make your space stand out with neutrals, start with a backdrop of a warm grey, light beige or crisp white. Whatever you prefer. Then, you add interest and draw the eye with different hues of that same color for a tonal effect. Black and dark brown accents will create a contrast and break up the softer tones.

When adding color, muted tones not too far from neutrals work well. Think of colors like:

  • Navy Blue
  • Burgundy
  • Olive and Sage
  • Pale Pinks
  • Pale Blues

These blend well with almost any neutral palette and won’t dominate the scheme.

Look for Clean Lines

Choosing well made, sustainable pieces has become important in contemporary design. Function is just as important as form.
Furniture should be comfortable, but practical; clean lines and simple shapes are key. Blend a mixture of straight and curved lines to add points of interest. But you want to avoid anything too elaborate and ornate.

Clean lines are particularly prominent in contemporary kitchen designs. Choose smooth countertops with a smooth finish and waterfall edges. For appliances, do for a cabinet door front that will blend with the rest of the units.

Use Art Pieces

Wallpaper and feature walls have been a popular trend for a while now. It adds interest and texture without being overwhelming. But, the risk with this is that a few years down the line, your tastes might change and outgrow your current choice.

You don’t need to worry about changing wallpaper trends. With a few pieces of framed artwork, you can get the same results. And, your choices are almost limited, with choices including:

  • Oils
  • Acrylics
  • Mixed Media
  • Graphics
  • Realism
  • Abstract

You get to pick from a whole range of materials and styles. They’re easy to put up and take down when you want to update your aesthetic. It’s an easy accessory to keep your current look up to date, and it’s a talking piece for your guests.

Use Light

To get that luxurious, glamorous feel make sure you’re using as much light as possible in your home. Don’t cram your windowsills with knick-knacks so that the most light can shine in. For darker days, use overhead lamps or lighting.

Mirrors are also great for illuminating dark rooms. They reflect the light and let it bounce around the room giving a more spacious feel too.

Revamp Your Front Door and Roof

When you’re working on your home design, it’s easy to get caught up in the interior. But first appearances are everything. Your front door and your roof have a huge impact on the first impression guests get of your home. If you’re making an effort inside, you don’t want that wasted on a grotty exterior.

Your front door is one of the first things people see and interact with inside your home. Use it to set the tone for what your guests should expect inside. A dirty old door with flaking paint might have guests expecting the same inside.

Go for bright colors like navy blue, bright red, or a nice sage green. Or you can use an interesting window feature to brighten it up. Stained glass can make a real impact and be the first feature piece in your home.

The same applies to your roof, it’s a large part of your home that stands out to your guests. An old, dated roof will bring down the appearance of your whole property, no matter how well kept the rest of the home is. Especially if it’s leaking too. A quality roofing company can update your roof to suit the new aesthetic you’re going for. You can find more information at https://prr247.com/.
