How installing roof windows can reduce SAD

October 13, 2022

It’s that time of the year. The dark nights are rolling in and we’re spending more and more time indoors. Naturally, some of us will experience feelings of a lower mood during this time, though there are plenty of home renovation solutions you can try, to try and reduce SAD.

What is SAD?

SAD stands for Seasonal Affective Disorder, more commonly known as seasonal depression. It can be caused by certain types of weather or temperature, and is most commonly experienced in the winter months. Some people feel their mood and energy levels drop when the weather gets colder, and if these feelings persist at a certain time of year, you might find you have SAD. Fortunately, there are plenty of North East flat roofing solutions that can help you counteract the symptoms.

Get More Sunlight

Installing roof windows will allow your home to get more sunlight during the day, which can help SAD sufferers. This is because the sun increases your serotonin, and it can even help you stave off SAD. The NHS recommends making your home and work environment as light as possible, as well as introducing options to let fresh air into the home, which can be achieved with roof windows.

Leave The Blinds Open

Those who suffer with SAD often find getting out of bed in the morning one of the most challenging times of the day. If you leave the blinds open on your roof windows, you can get as much light as possible in the room and that will encourage your body to get out of bed, as well as increasing your serotonin level early in the morning, setting you up for a successful day.

Work Near The Light

If you work from home, or even if you’re doing homework, working near natural light will ease your symptoms of SAD. Consider installing roof windows in a place where you can put your desk, if possible. This means you can benefit from all of the serotonin the sun has to offer, whilst simultaneously getting your work done and easing your SAD symptoms. If you can’t install a desk in that location, consider putting a sofa, loveseat or even a beanbag nearby, so you can sit in the sun, while enjoying the warmth of your home.

Regulate Your Sleep

Having a skylight in the bedroom can help regulate your sleep pattern. It will encourage your body to get in sync with the natural day and night cycle, encouraging you to wake up and go to sleep when the sun rises and sets. This will have a positive impact on your mood and psychological state, improving your productivity too!

As you can see, there are so many ways that a roof window or skylight installation can help with SAD, and improve your symptoms, by simply re-introducing natural light to the home. Of course, if you are really struggling with the symptoms of SAD, be sure to consult your doctor and have conversations with the people you trust the most.
