Home Maintenance: When to Call a Pro & When to DIY

September 5, 2022

It’s possible to save money by taking care of routine maintenance tasks on your own, but only if you know what you’re doing.

Every year, DIYers harm themselves at an alarming rate. When you include the cost of medical care, doing it yourself might wind up costing as much as or more than hiring a professional.

However, not every simple maintenance project requires the services of a professional. Take a look at this article to find out when you should call up a pro to deal with your issue or if you can handle the project independently.

Heating and plumbing maintenance

Though you may be able to handle minor plumbing difficulties and routine maintenance on your own, it’s crucial to recognize your own limitations. When it comes to house plumbing and heating, a job that is too advanced for a beginner may frequently cause more problems than it solves.

For example, only a trained heating specialist should service your boiler. It’s OK to do routine maintenance on your own, such as repressurizing the system or bleeding the radiators. Don’t mess around when it comes to fixing your boiler; call in the experts. If your boiler is beyond repair, a team of expert experts can replace it so you can stay warm all winter long.

Insulation work

When we’re at the topic of staying warm during the winter months, insulation can be a key aspect of that. If you need to update your home’s insulation or you need completely new insulation for metal building you have near your main property, it’s always better to call the professionals.

Installing insulation often requires special machinery that many of us simply don’t have at our disposal. You can get it done on your own for sure, but the quality simply won’t be the same as when handled by the experts. Plus, there may be asbestos in your old insulation which you can never know before accessing it. Professionals should always be called in that case.

Door and window installation

An increase in expenses, such as utility bills, might result from improperly fitted doors and windows. Nicely stylized doors may add a lot of character to your home, but installing them correctly is best left to a professional. Doing it yourself can seem like a task you can take care of, but if you don’t take the time to ensure that you’re using accurate dimensions, you might wind up with a door that doesn’t close or open properly. However, you’ll need some practice and know-how to install a curved sliding door track that will match your doors’ radius.

Furthermore, new windows should be installed by a specialist to guarantee a correct fit. In this manner, you won’t have to worry about the weather or anything else outside affecting your safety.

Removing a tree from your garden

If you have a big tree in your yard, it’s best to hire a contractor to take it down. Tree cutting is a dangerous job. As you attempt to chop down the tree, you run the risk of injuring yourself and others and even damaging your property. Cutting down a big tree in your yard is a job for the pros since they have the tools and expertise to accomplish it safely and efficiently.

It’s also not a good idea to climb the tree yourself to prune the branches. The tree cutting and trimming should be left to the experts. Professionals will be able to execute the task in a way that leaves your property looking neat and appealing, which is another reason to hire them.

Roofing work

If you take care of your roof, it will take care of you. To keep their house safe, homeowners should routinely inspect their roofing, gutters, and downspouts.

No matter how brave you are, you should never do anything dangerous on great heights. It is still possible to check the condition of your roof, but only from a safe distance. You can see your roof shingles if you take a step back from your house. If there’s a big crack in the shingles or one that’s missing, you can easily see it from a distance.
