Everything to Know About Shingle Installation

July 6, 2022

In order to fit properly shingles are cut.

Did you know that the average roof replacement costs over $11,000? However, it’s more common to need asphalt shingles repaired instead of the whole roof.

Shingle installation is very straightforward but can be challenging if it’s your first attempt. Knowing exactly how to shingle a roof can prevent costly damage to your home.

The following guide will explain everything you need to know about installing shingles and how they work.

Why Are Shingles Needed?

The shingles on your roof act as a defensive barrier while also adding curb appeal to your home. They’re installed over a roof’s underlayment, sheathing, or trusses to protect against damaging outdoor elements and moisture.

A portion of shingles also gets installed at the perimeter of a roof once the decking is in place. These outer shingles stop water from penetrating the roof’s edges.

Shingle Installation

First, lay down tarps on the ground to catch any waste that comes off the roof. Remove old or damaged shingles using a roofing fork.

Be careful not to damage windows or siding while removing shingles. Use a basic hammer as a lever to pry up the nails for removal.

Next, install the roof deck protection to create a protective layer between your home to keep out water and cold temperatures.

Install new metal flashing along the bottom of your roof by your gutters and shingles near the edges. Nail the flashing in place with a hammer and roofing nails.

Make sure to install flashing around chimneys and other areas where two roof planes come together. These roof areas are more likely to leak if you don’t protect them.

Finally, lay out your shingle courses and start nailing down your shingles. Drive your nails about 2 inches from the ends of each shingle. The next shingle course must cover the previous nails by at least 1 inch.

Cut the final shingle on each row to the appropriate size so that it goes to the ridge. Bend the shingle over the ridge making sure each side is equal and then nail it into place.

Finally, cut the last shingle on the ridge to the appropriate length and make sure the roof is completely covered. Consider hiring trained professionals such as Roof Round Rock for larger areas needing repairs.

Types of Shingles

Strip shingles are the most basic type of asphalt shingles and the first kind ever used. They’re created from a single layer and give a flat look with a slate appearance. They’re light and cost much less than other shingle types.

Dimensional shingles are the most common asphalt shingles used today. They use two or more asphalt layers of asphalt to create a thicker look. Dimensional shingles weigh more than strip shingles and have better protection warranties.

Luxury shingles are high-quality laminated shingles that provide a unique look or function to a roof. They offer extra protection from the elements while adding personality to homes.
