Don’t Throw Money Down The Drain: The Dangers of DIY Plumbing Repairs

September 10, 2021

Did you know that 70% of Americans prefer to DIY home improvement projects? While it can be fun and educational to learn new skills, there are some things that are best left to professionals.

One such thing is plumbing! You might think it’s easy to just plug a leak or stop a faucet from dripping. But you might be doing more harm than good.

Here are all the reasons why you shouldn’t do DIY plumbing!

You Might Flood Your House

One of the biggest issues with DIY plumbing is it’s very easy to flood your house. All it takes is one mistake: forgetting to shut off the water before you start.

Or you might be working on a rusted valve, so you decide to take a wrench to it to force it open. But this can end up with the valve breaking, which floods your house!

You Can Cause Water Damage

Even if you don’t manage to flood your house, you can end up with water damage in the future. Because you’re not a professional, you might not seal things off properly.

For example, if you try to DIY a toilet fix, but do it wrong, water can end up leaking into the floorboards underneath.

You Can Damage the Pipes

DIY plumbing tools are often wrong for the job. If you use the wrong one to fix a broken pipe, you just might end up with one that’s damaged even further.

And many DIYers think just giving pipes a few whacks will fix things right up. But in reality, this can also further damage your pipes and cause leaks!

You Might Hurt Yourself

The reality of injuries happening is very real with any DIY job. This is especially true if you have 0 experience.

Don’t put yourself at risk by trying to handle jobs that are out of your depth. Hiring professional plumbers will be worth every penny spent when your plumbing issues are fixed correctly, efficiently, and most of all, safely!

You Can Create Dangerous Situations

When you’re working with plumbing, it’s often closely connected with your electric and gas connections as well. If you don’t know what you’re doing, it’s very easy to do improper repairs. There are numerous connections with soldering, nuts, bolts, screws, etc.

As a result, you might mess up the other connections and set yourself up for dangerous situations, such as house fires!

Avoid DIY Plumbing and Hire a Pro Instead

Don’t try to save a few bucks by looking at YouTube videos on plumbing and trying to fix things yourself. There’s a good possibility you’ll end up with a bigger problem in your house!

So while DIY plumbing might be interesting to do, you should leave plumbing in the hands of professionals. They’ll make sure everything’s in working order!
