April 1, 2022

Did you know EPA-certified pellet stoves produce a low amount of air pollution? Americans are investing in pellet stoves for this reason. If you’re a new pellet stove owner but need maintenance tips, we can help.

This guide will go over essential maintenance tips for pellet stoves. Keep your pellet stove in solid shape. Make sure you get work done on it before the heating season.

Prep Your Pellet Stove for Winter

Make sure you hire a professional before the cooler months. The professional will clean and inspect your pellet stove, chimney, and pipes. They ensure these areas don’t have rodents or debris.

If you have an issue with rodents, consider installing a chimney cap. The chimney cap will keep the rodents from invading your pellet stove. The cap will prevent moisture and water from slipping inside.

A pellet stove technician will also complete a test run. This way, they can ensure the mechanical parts in your stove are in good shape.

Inspect Your Pellet Stove for Issues

Pay attention to how the stove operates every day. Does it make weird noises?

Watch out for any black smoke appearing in areas it shouldn’t. Is the flame white or bright yellow? If you notice anything strange, call in professional pellet stove dealers to inspect it.

Clean the Stove Each Week

You’ll want to clean out the pellet stove once a week during the heating season.

Get rid of any soot build-up from the glass doors. Use a commercial glass cleaner for heated doors and wipe them down with a paper towel.

You will also need to clean the metal parts of your pellet stove. You can clean this area with a wire brush. Ensure you empty the ashes from the trap or ash drawer once a week.

You’ll want to clean out the entire pellet stove at the end of your heating season. Most mechanical issues occur because of dirty parts. Make sure you unscrew the panels or pipes of your stove. Vacuum the inside.

Get rid of leftover pellets. Pellets will absorb water and could break down inside the hopper. Scoop out the remaining pellets or burn them away.

Pellet stoves will create dust, ash, and soot in different amounts. Clean your pellet stove often so it performs well.

Get rid of the ash and dust from the burn pot. Locate the pot at the bottom of your pellet stove. Find the handle at the front or the back of the stove.

After figuring that part out, take out the pot and throw away the contents.

Maintain Your Pellet Stove

We hope this guide on essential pellet stove maintenance was helpful.

You should look at cleaning your pellet stove once a week during the heating season. Make sure you call a professional to inspect the stove before the season begins.
