7 Tips for preparing for winter

November 23, 2022

There is no set time for your boiler to break or pipes to freeze. But whenever it happens, it leads to big chaos that comes with headaches and expensive home repairs. But if you prepare for winter beforehand, you can reduce the damage.

The best practice is to prepare your home for winter one week before it comes. If you don’t have enough budget for home maintenance, you can opt for no refusal payday loans. This way, you can maintain your home for winter without worrying about where to get money.

So, here are ten steps to prepare for winter:

Bring the heat

Check your home heating system beforehand, so you don’t have to spend your first cold night without heat. Replace the furnace filters. If possible, hire a contractor to examine and clean your chimneys and furnaces.

Winterize your pipes

The biggest problem in winter is pipe bursts and water leaks. In such a case, ensure that everyone in the house knows how to stop the water supply. Choose a contractor to check and winterize the plumbing pipes beforehand. Also, drain any garden hoses or outdoor faucets to prevent freezing.

Prepare the garden

Trim the big trees and cut out unnecessary branches to prevent them from falling and damaging your home or other belongings. Clean out gutters from any stocks or leaves so that they function correctly.

Examine the smoke detectors

It is best safety practice to check your smoke detectors once a year. And winter can be the best time for testing. Ensure that your smoke detectors are working correctly. Consider switching its batteries to extend the working period. Deep clean any dust and debris.

Check the attic

Your attic is your favorite shelter for cutters, squirrels, birds, and possums. No doubt, they are adorable and can cause various issues. They might damage your home while creating their own comfortable settings.

Also, they might cause health issues for your family. Therefore, ensure that your attics are clean. Trim any branches reaching out to your roof. Ensure that your roof has no opening or way in for animals.

Play it cool(er)

Huge heating bills are nightmares for every person during winter. So, you should consider lowering the temperature of your water heater by 120-130 degrees. This may sound uncomfortable, but you should also enjoy a bit of winter by playing it cooler.

But there will still be enough hot water for shower, laundry, and kitchen usage. Although, it will significantly reduce your heating bills, bringing a more straightforward method for saving money this winter.

Seal the air leaks

You might raise the thermostat in the winter because chilly air can seep into your home through tiny cracks and crevices. Examine any drafty windows or doors and cover them with caulk, pressured expanding foam, or weatherstripping materials. This will maintain the temperature of your home without increasing your heating costs.
