7 Telltale Mouse Infestation Signs That You Should Never Ignore

February 4, 2021

Nobody wants mice in their home.

While mice are rarely seen by humans in nature, they can cause big problems when they get inside a home. For instance, mice are rodents that can carry disease and other health risks.

Not only can mice put your family’s health in danger, but their urine and feces can also turn your house into a bacterial breeding ground.

But how can you know if mice are present in your home? Here, we’re sharing the most telltale mouse infestation signs with you. Just keep on reading to find out what they are.

1. Droppings

The most telling sign of mouse infestation is the presence of droppings.

Mouse droppings are tiny pellets that appear brown to black in hue. Mice can leave up to 75 pellets a day, so you’re likely to find some somewhere if your home is housing mice.

To check for dropping, look in small nooks and crannies. Check in the bottom of the pantry, in hallways, or in the back of closets.

2. Strange or Putrid Odors

The feces and urine that mice produce can make your house smell strange or even putrid.

This is an important thing to look out for because, as mouse urine and feces dry, they dissipate into the air and can become bacteria your family breathes.

3. Gnawed Holes or Chewed Wood

How do mice get in your home? Sometimes they can find small holes, cracks, or openings. Other times, they chew their way in.

Mice are rodents that love to chew. If you suspect a mouse infestation, check for gnawed holes or chewed wood around doors, baseboards, and any wooden furniture.

5. Nests

If a mouse family has decided to move in, you might be able to locate a nest or multiple nests.

Look for small piles of shredded paper, string, hair, or any other similar material that could be used for a mouse’s nest. If you find one, try to leave it alone and call your local pest control.

6. Scampering or Squeaking Noises

Do you hear faint rustling, scampering, or even high-pitched squeaks? You might have a mouse infestation in your home!

These noises come from mice running throughout your home, walls, or in small nooks.

7. Odd Pet Behavior

If your cat or dog is acting weird, it might be because they sense mice nearby.

For instance, your dog might be barking at seemingly nothing. Or, they might appear to chase something or paw at a door or wall.

If a cat senses mice, you might see her exhibit predatory behavior that is unusual for your furry friend.

Be Aware of These Mouse Infestation Signs

It’s always a good idea to keep your eyes open for these mouse infestation signs, even if you think your home is rodent-free. The hardest part about a mouse infestation is the fact that mice are sneaky and can live among us for a long time without us realizing it!
