The 7 Steps to Fix Your Unbalanced Garage Door

  1. Gather the essential tools such as a stepladder, two winding bars, a 3/8-inch, open-end wrench and locking pliers.
  2. Close the garage door and disconnect the power cord of the motor. Check for the location of the motor and disconnect it so you don’t get any electric shocks.
  3. Open the garage door in increments and check if it opens in each position or not. If not then close the door and follow the next step.
  4. Take a stepladder to access the tension-spring adjuster and the torsion rod. Attach the locking pliers onto the torsion rod vertically with a space of 12 inches from the adjuster. The handle of the pliers should be in contact with the door header or the wall so that they prevent the door from turning while you are balancing the adjustment.
  5. Insert the winding bar from the end into the lower hole on the spring adjuster. With one hand, hold the other end of the bar. Using a 3/8-inch, open-end wrench, loosen the lock nuts on the adjuster. The spring tension will push the bar against the upper rail from the opening, which should be left in this position only.

Where you have inserted the first bar, insert the end of another winding bar and hold the outer end of the bar with at least a hand. Keep a firm grip on the end of the first bar so that it does not fall. Lift the second bar’s end enough that it tilts at a 45 degree angle.

When you insert the first bar’s end into the lowermost hole, maintain the upward pressure while relaxing pressure on the upper bar. Do this until the lower bar is resting against the upper rail.

  1. Tighten the lock nuts using a wrench. Rotate the adjuster upward using the second bar. Rotate it upward enough for removing the lower bar.
  2. Raise the door and lower it in increments with your hand. Keep on repeating the procedure if the garage door does not remain open in any position.

Re-engage the emergency release on the track. Once your door is balanced, plug in the power cord.
