1. Display art in new ways

Having one picture per wall is an old style and it can make a house look rather dated. Instead, try the versatility of a picture rail to help you display multiple pieces in one area. You can adjust these so that you can arrange a number of large pictures or a gallery of smaller framed items, and you’ll be able to adjust and personalise your display whenever you want. Remember, you don’t just have to hang paintings. You could opt to have photos, posters, quotes, or even objects like souvenirs on display.

2. Get the colours right

Your colour scheme will be the base for all your decor, so you need to make sure you get it right. It’s always worth getting a paint sample before you start painting a whole wall in case you choose the wrong colour initially. You should also consider whether you want warm or cold colours, vibrant or pastel, and what kind of tones you like. Picking paint colours can be a challenge, but as long as you take time and choose carefully, you’ll be sure to get it right.

Feature walls have been a home decor hack for years because they’re a timeless idea. 6. Bring plants indoors

Whether you have a garden or not, it can still really make a room feel pleasant if you bring plants indoors. There are plenty of indoor plants that you can choose from. You could go for having a few simple potted plants around, or you could go as far as having a living wall of climbing plants. Not only do plants make rooms look brighter, but they can also improve your mood and health, so it’s well worth having plants. Plus, an aloe vera plant in a kitchen is always a good idea in case of cooking accidents.

7. Make sure you have enough lighting

Lighting is vital to stop a room from feeling gloomy, but many of us have rooms that don’t get a lot of natural light. You can solve this by adding lamps or mirrors. Adding lamps to the corners of rooms will really help make rooms feel larger, while mirrors will help you reflect natural light and make the most of the sunshine, even if you have relatively small windows. Try colour-changing lightbulbs if you want to use your lamps to set a certain mood in your home.
