Did you know that, on average, Americans spent $9,081 on home improvements in 2018? Stay on top of home repairs this year.

Are you looking for a spring home maintenance checklist? Not to worry! In this guide, we’ll go over how to maintain your home.

Want to learn more? Keep reading to find out.

1. Take a Look at Your Roof

Harsh winter weather like heavy snow, hail, or high winds can damage roof shingles. Look at your roof to see if there’s any damage.

Once the snow has melted, it will begin to run down to the edge of the roof and refreeze. In some cases, this ice can get pushed beneath the shingles. This will cause leaking and damage to your roof.

Make sure you repair or replace any damaged spots. If you can’t do the work right away, cover that area with a tarp.

2. Clear out the Gutters and Downspouts

After the last frost, make sure your downspouts and gutters get cleaned out. Clogged downspouts and gutters can cause the wood edging at the eaves to rot. Critters can invade your attic space.

Clean these two out early in the spring. This will help prevent any damage from spring rains. Water will get diverted away from your home and not collect at your foundation.

3. Reseal Outside Wood and Look for Termites

Take a look at your railings, fences, decks, and pergolas. Make sure they get stained and resealed every year. Take the time to repair any of the woodwork.

In March through to June, termites will swarm. If you see a bunch of these winged insects flying out a hole in any woodwork, call a professional.

4. Paint the Outside of Your Home

Consider changing the color of your home or refreshing the shade in the spring. Drive through your town and see what colors stand out to you.

You can also work with a color consultant to pick the right shade for your home.

5. Check Your Driveway

Over winter, freezing and thawing will affect asphalt, concrete, and other materials. Walk around your property and see if there’s any damage on your driveway or paths around your home.

You can patch asphalt, but damaged concrete may need to get replaced.

6. Inspect Your Trees

Does your property have any trees? If so, in the springtime, have them looked over by an arborist. They can look for any signs of illness.

They can also see if there are any dead branches and catch issues before a tree dies. A dying tree could become a safety hazard for your home and your family.

Continue to check on the rest of your home after winter. If you face any plumbing issues, call an emergency plumber.
