6 Gardening Ideas for Small Yards

June 14, 2022

Are you fed up with having an unkempt disaster of a backyard, but don’t have the money to hire a horticulture expert to set you on the right track?

From tomatoes to zucchini, you can start an incredible, edible garden without needing an enormous backyard. Check out our guide on gardening ideas for a small yard below to get started!

1. Maximize Space With Vertical Gardening

Vertical gardening is a great way to maximize the space in your garden. You can grow vegetables, flowers, and herbs on walls, fences, and trellises. This type of gardening is perfect for small yards because it utilizes vertical space instead of taking up valuable horizontal space.

If you are building your own frame, choose a location that gets plenty of sunlight. The frame should be at least six feet tall, and it is best to attach it to a wall or fence for stability.

2. Use Containers to Grow Plants

You can grow vegetables, fruits, and flowers in containers on your patio, deck, or porch. Containers also work well if you don’t have a lot of sunlight or soil.

You can use almost any type of container for gardening, including pots, barrels, buckets, and baskets. The size of the container will determine how much soil you need and how many plants you can grow.

3. Add Interest With Garden Art

Garden art can be anything from a simple birdhouse to a metal sculpture. It can be something you make yourself or something you buy from a store.

You can also try using plants in unusual containers with sand gravel, or plant them in odd places in your garden. You can find sand gravel for sale online, and at different gardening shops.

If you have a water feature in your garden, you can use it to add interest. You can put statues or other decorations around the edge of the pond or fountain, or you can put plants in the water. If you don’t have a water feature, you can still add interest by using containers filled with water or by planting wetland plants.

4. Mulching

A popular method for keeping plants healthy and looking their best is mulching. Mulching is the process of adding a layer of material around plants to protect them from weather damage, help retain soil moisture, and suppress weed growth.

Many different materials can be used for mulching, including bark chips, straw, leaves, and compost.

The benefits of mulching are especially noticeable in small backyard designs. In a small yard, every inch counts, so using mulch can help you make the most of your space.

5. Use Dwarf Varieties

If you have a small yard, consider using dwarf varieties of vegetables and flowers. They take up less space and are perfect for gardeners who don’t have a lot of time to spend tending to their plants. Dwarf varieties are also great for container gardening.

Some good dwarf vegetable varieties to try include: tomatoes (Bush Early Girl), peppers (Numex Twilight), cucumbers (Bush Bushmaster), eggplant (Classic Eggplant), and zucchini (Bush Green Zucchini). For flowers, look for dwarf varieties of petunias, marigolds, impatiens, and begonias.
