5 Ways to Make Your Home More Eco Friendly

August 23, 2020

According to recent numbers, the average American produces about 2,072 pounds of waste in a single year. Fortunately, the detrimental effects that this has on the environment can be avoided if you’re a bit more vigilant with the resources that you use around the home.

Here, we’re going to talk about some ways that you can make your house eco friendly. Read on to learn some of the things that you can do to reach for that goal!

1. Go Solar

The first thing that you can do to make your home more eco-friendly is to install solar power. Residential solar panels are an affordable expense in most neighborhoods, and they save money in the long-term since you won’t need to pay high electric bills.

Better yet, they convert sunlight into renewable energy that powers your lights and every piece of technology that you use on a daily basis! This means that you don’t need to waste energy to power these devices. Learn how to choose the right sized solar power system for your home so that you can power everything that you need to in the most efficient way possible!

2. Use Natural Light

While solar power is amazingly sustainable, you also will want to save power by optimizing the use of natural light in your home. Incorporate more windows and larger glass openings into your home. Skylights are a great way to get some light from above, too, so that you can be illuminated from all directions.

You can also open the floor plan of your home next time you do renovations. This gives the light more room to bounce throughout your home. By making this shift, you can save your solar energy for the nighttime when there isn’t any natural light.

3. Insulate Your Space

Insulating every room in your home is a good way to save energy on temperature regulation. It will trap heat in your space, which means that you won’t need to turn your HVAC to such a high setting during the wintertime. You can be cozy and comfortable without using fuel and nonrenewable resources to keep your house warm.

4. Minimize Water Use

Most people use significantly more water around the home than they actually need to. No one needs to take a 20-minute shower, for example- you can get in and out in five minutes and save a lot of water. You also can easily turn off the tap while you’re brushing your teeth and when you’re slicing veggies after washing them.

A little bit of vigilance here will go a long way!

5. Get Eco Friendly Home Products

From toilet paper to disposable plates to laundry detergent, a lot of items around the home eventually go to waste. This is inevitable. However, you can do your part to minimize your carbon footprint by investing in environmentally-friendly toilet paper and paper towels, recycled paper, and sustainably-made cleaners.

Help the Environment Today!

While there are many ways that humans can do their part in helping the environment, making your home more sustainable is essential to your efforts. After all, there’s nowhere that you spend nearly as much time as in your house!

Now that you know how to have a more eco friendly home, it’s time to learn more about optimizing your space! Check out the ‘house’ tab on our page for more ideas on how you can renovate your home.
