5 Ways to Keep Your Garden Healthy

April 17, 2019

Prevention is better than cure. Proper attendance and maintenance of your garden will save you the cost and stress of seeing your farm plants dying. You also do not want to forego the benefits that your garden offers; Constant supply of vegetables and fruits, the therapeutic value of your garden, the serene environment and the daily dose of exercise your doctor recommended. A great gardener is always on the lookout for information and techniques of making his farm better. This article provides you with five valuable tips for maintaining a healthy garden.

Use Organic Manure

Organic manure contains high organic matter vital for the improvement of soil structure. It also contains high amounts of carbon, phosphorus, and nitrogen which are key nutrients for plant growth. Plants grown from organic manure are resistant to diseases and are healthier. Animal waste, garbage and compost are reliable sources of organic manure. The high nutritional value of organic manure will also save you the cost of purchasing fertilizers. Your expenditure on pesticides is also likely to reduce as a result of healthy plants.

Weeding

Weeds compete for nutrients and water with other plants. Because they grow fast than other plants, they limit sunlight access to crops. Plants competing with weeds for space tend to be weak. Weeds results in overcrowding which in turn leads to low yields. It is recommended to regularly check for any growth of weeds and remove them, if there are hardy weeds, you can use herbicides.

Also, remove weak and old plants to give space to healthier crops. Removal of ailing plants prevents the spread of diseases in the garden.

While there are minor benefits of keeping certain types of weeds e,g broadleaf plantain and chickweed, removing weeds is more beneficial.

Seeds Selection

The quality of seeds or seedlings is fundamental in the health of your plants. Flawless seeds result in sturdy and healthier plants. You are more likely to get higher yields if you plant the right seeds. For quality plants, select seeds which have no breakages and originate from the healthiest plants. Seed experts analyze factors such as seed germination potential, vigor, and immunity. It would be advisable to buy seeds from a verified supplier.

Have a Reliable Supply of Water

Water is life, just like human-beings, plants also need water. Tracking your water supply sources is very critical in gardening. If you pay for your water supply, always pay on time. Acquire water reservoirs for storage and harvesting of rainwater.

Also, learn how to balance water use in your garden, a waterlogged garden can result in diseases while insufficient water can lead to wilting of your plants.

Plants have different water consumption capacities. The succulent plants have high water intake levels and may need watering daily.

You can also do mulching to help in the retention of moisture and soil nutrients.

Encourage Bees

Every gardener understands the role bees play in pollination. Bees help in cross-pollination as they such for nectar and pollen grains. Cross-pollination results in more flowers in your garden and the improvement of yields. For a healthy farm, you can plant different varieties of plants in your garden or flowers that bees love. Examples of flowers that bees love are oregano,bee-balm,marigold and clovers.

If you do not fear bees, you can set up a beehive in your backyard or an area near your garden.

You can keep your garden productive if you regularly attend to it. You can quickly eliminate diseases and pests if you note them early. It is recommended to get a person to attend to your farm when you travel or at work. Additionally, you can seek the services of your local agricultural officer if you need technical guidance in gardening.
