5 Helpful Tips for Home Heating Maintenance

October 24, 2020

During the winter of 2018-19, the average US household spent more than $500 on natural gas, $1,500 on heating oil, and $1,100 on electricity for heating.

If you want to keep heating costs down, you need your heating system to be in good working order.

That means having a good home heating maintenance regime.

Read on as we look at some helpful tips for keeping your heating system well maintained.

1. Replace Your Filters

The filters in your heating system are responsible for keeping dust, pollen, bacteria, and more out of your heating system.

The trouble with filters is that if they’re doing their job correctly, they’re going to get clogged up. If you don’t change your filters regularly, your heating system will have to work harder than it needs to, which will mean you end up paying more for your heating than you should.

Regularly check your filters and replace them before they become too clogged.

2. Keep Vents Unblocked

Air filters stop contaminants from getting into your system. Vents are where the warm air gets out.

Once again, dust and other debris can build up in your vents, clogging them up. Your system is put under more strain in getting the warm air out to where it’s needed, and as a consequence, your bills can go up and the lifespan of your heating system can go down.

You should regularly check your ducts and wipe them down to keep them unblocked.

3. Schedule Regular Inspections

Some maintenance jobs you can do yourself, but if you want your system to stay well maintained, then you’re going to need to call in the professionals.

Scheduling regular inspections with a reputable heating company will ensure that any problems with your heating system are spotted early and can be rectified before they become serious issues.

After all, prevention is better (and cheaper) than the cure.

4. Listen For Noises

You should learn to listen to your heating system. Once you become familiar with its sounds, it’s easier to notice when something doesn’t sound right.

Strange noises are usually a tell-tale sign of a problem with your system, so taking a regular listen to things is a simple but effective way to keep your heating system in good shape.

5. Keep the Exhaust Clear

Furnaces can generate fumes that can cause serious issues if they enter your home.

That’s why it’s vital to check that the exhaust of your heating system is kept clear. You should build this check into your regular maintenance schedule in order to reduce the risk of dangerous fumes in your home.

Home Heating Maintenance Is Important

Home heating maintenance may seem like just another chore you could do without, but if you want your heating system to stay in top condition, then it’s definitely time well spent.

Take care of your heating system, and your heating system will take care of you.
