5 Effective Strategies for Improving Your Home’s Safety and Security

December 15, 2020

Do you feel safe in your own home? Are you constantly worried about your security even when you lock all the doors? You are not alone. According to a recent survey, 58 percent of adults in the United States say they feel worried about their safety all the time. Their top concerns include violent crimes, such as robbery and assault.

Your home should be the one place where you don’t spend your nights awake with worry. Aside from the risks of losing sleep, you should be able to feel safe in your house. Below are some tips on how you can improve the security of your residential property.

  • Trim Your Lawn

Hedges and shrubs provide the perfect cover for criminals who may want to break into your home. Routinely trim the plant life around your property to prevent giving potential criminals a place to hide and scope out your house. Make sure to uproot any undergrowth, especially those that grow close to your doors and windows. This not only improves safety but also your property’s curb appeal.

  • Invest in Lights

Light is one of the best deterrents for criminals there is, who prefer to do their dirty work in the dark. Under cover of dark, they can pry open doors and break into cars. However, it may be difficult to perfectly illuminate the exterior of your house without the right hardware. Outdoor lighting wall packs are ideal for this sort of use because their high intensity LED lighting uses less energy. Remember to place them strategically around your property to ensure no area remains in deep shadow.

  • Rethink Glass Doors

Doors are barriers between you and the outdoor world which makes it baffling why so many houses feature glass doors or doors with glass panes. These present a security threat because anyone can just smash these doors and open them without much difficulty. Consider replacing any glass door that opens to your exterior. If you must use them, go for impact-resistant glass, which is stronger and more difficult for criminals to break through. These materials are also hurricane-proof, making them ideal for protecting against adverse weather and crime.

  • Put Lights on Timers

Criminals prefer to strike when you aren’t at home, and they can freely rifle through your belongings for valuables. A darkened house basically tells them the homeowners aren’t present. There are many kinds of timers you can use to set off your lights at different times. This creates the illusion that somebody is at home and prevents thieves from automatically assuming your house is an easy target.

  • Install a Mail Slot

Another way thieves scout out properties to check if the owner are on extended vacation is by looking at their mail. If your mail is left in a scattered pile on your porch or doorstep, it’s a tell-tale sign no one is at home to collect them. You should install a large mail slot on your front door to prevent mail form piling up in this fashion. If you’re expecting larger packages, ask neighbors to claim them for your and avoid them getting stolen in turn.

You deserve to feel safe and comfortable in your own home. These methods let you have peace of mind in your property and help deter thieves.
