5 Common HVAC Problems to Look Out For

November 8, 2022

Your HVAC system is one of the most important elements in your home. They keep your family comfortable and the temperature inside your house steady. But just like any other mechanical system in your home, your HVAC system can develop problems.

When it’s not working properly, it can leave you feeling sweltering in the summer or freezing in the coldest months. We’ve created this guide so that you can be aware of five common HVAC problems you may face if your system isn’t working as well as it should be.

Read on to learn more!

1. Strange Noises Coming From HVAC System

This usually indicates something is wrong with the fan, the motor, or the ductwork. If you hear a grinding noise, it could be that the fan blades are hitting something.

If you hear a hissing noise, there may be a problem with the ductwork. If you hear a clicking noise, it could be that the motor is having trouble starting.

2. Inconsistent Temperature

A number of common HVAC issues can lead to inconsistent temperatures at home. For example, if the thermostat is not set correctly, it can cause the temperature to fluctuate.

Another possible reason is a problematic ductwork. If the ductwork is not properly sealed, it can allow air to escape, which can lead to fluctuations in temperature.

Finally, a problem with the air filter can also lead to inconsistencies. If the air filter is dirty, it can restrict air flow, which can cause the temperature to fluctuate.

3. Not Enough or Too Much Airflow

A filthy air filter, closed vents, or an issue with the ductwork could all contribute to this. Uneven airflow can make your home feel uncomfortable and can increase your energy bills.

If you suspect an issue with your HVAC system’s airflow, the first step is to check the air filter. If it is dirty, replace it with a new one. If that doesn’t solve the problem, inspect the vents. Ensure they are all open and not blocked by furniture or other objects.

4. Unusual Smells Coming From HVAC System

A clogged air filter can restrict airflow and cause your HVAC system to work harder than usual, leading to strange smells. Another potential problem is a cracked heat exchanger. A cracked heat exchanger can cause a burning smell, as well as potentially lead to carbon monoxide leaks.

This is why you have to learn more about air conditioning or heating systems. Arising problems may not only cost you money but the health of your family.

5. HVAC Unit Is Constantly Running

If your HVAC unit is constantly running, it could indicate several problems. It could be that your unit is too large for your home, causing it to work overtime to try and cool or heat your home.

Another possibility is that your ductwork is leaky, causing your unit to run longer to make up for the lost air. Or, it could be a simple issue like a dirty air filter restricting airflow and causing your unit to work harder.

Be Aware When You Have HVAC Problems

Most HVAC problems can be prevented with regular HVAC maintenance. However, you should still be aware and vigilant about these five common problems. These include leaks, clogs, and condensation. If you notice any of these problems, be sure to contact a professional HVAC service right away to have it repaired.
