When to See a Psychiatrist for Mental Assessment and Treatment

July 21, 2021

Being human is about displaying a wide range of emotions depending on the current situation or past experiences. It may be the loss of a loved one that drove you to depths of sadness. With time, unhealed sadness generates depression. At this point, suicidal thoughts, withdrawal from social interactions, and losing sleep start invading your mental sobriety. If you or someone you know is showing signs of mental health problems, seeking help from a San Diego psychiatrist at MindSet can be helpful.

The following signs will help you determine if you need psychiatric intervention:

1. Your mental problem is preventing you from fulfilling your daily obligations

The brain is a vital organ that receives messages from your other body organs to perform basic tasks. It can only function if you are at peace. But, if you notice that you cannot function like you used to, it is time to see a psychiatrist. Chances are, your mental health condition could have developed gradually or occurred due to triggers from your past.

2. You have mood swings

While it is not easy to stay happy and content all the time, mood swings can suggest a severe mental issue. People with bipolar disorder can be happy one minute, only to express sadness and outbursts the next minute. Drowning your sorrow in alcohol and drugs can be tragic since these substances only work to destabilize the brain.

3. You cannot forget your past traumas

Studies suggest that one of the leading causes of high divorce rates is past traumatic events such as rape. A woman who underwent a rape ordeal as a child is likely to experience the same triggers, mainly if they have not gone for counseling to deal with their past. Such a person may associate a rapist with their current partner, leading to more frustrations in marriage. If you or someone you know has experienced a traumatic event, the best way to deal with the issue is through psychiatric intervention.

4. You are thinking of committing suicide or harming yourself

Thoughts of committing suicide or causing bodily harm are signs that you are going through a rough situation. You may have stated it is a joke and ruled it out, but that does not prevent you from thinking of it in the future. Depression and mood disorders are the leading mental issues that may subject you to suicidal thoughts. However, many mental illnesses might aggravate your suicidal thoughts.

5. You have trouble eating and sleeping

Mental illnesses can affect your ability to eat and sleep well. Binge-eating or avoiding food altogether is not a healthy choice to make. If you notice you stay awake with sad thoughts flooding your mind, see a psychiatrist immediately.

Generally, psychiatrists are human mind doctors. They can clinically assess your mental illness based on your symptoms. They have also dealt with a wide range of mental health issues throughout their career. If you have one or more of these symptoms, seek help immediately. To find out about mental health services, schedule a consultation with your psychiatrist today.
