What Your Favorite Shower Temperature Says About You

September 10, 2020

Did you know the average American spends over 60 hours a year in the shower? The average shower lasts about eight minutes, and the majority of people shower or bathe daily. Despite bathing being universal, there’s some hot debate about the perfect shower temperature.

Some people ardently defend the steaming-hot shower, claiming that it opens pores and softens skin. Yet others are loyal to the super-cold shower, touting its supposed health benefits. Some people don’t pick a side and just go for pleasantly lukewarm water.

Though it’s less personal than your zodiac sign or enneagram type, the shower temperature you prefer says a lot about you and your approach to life. Read on to find yourself!

Boiling Hot Showers

You’re daring. You’re strong. You’re invincible.

If you step out of the shower red as a lobster, you know exactly what you want and aren’t afraid to chase it. Your creature comforts are important to you, and nothing feels better than a jet of hot water on your sore bones.

Sure, you’ve read the studies about how hot water dries out your skin. You probably know that cold is better for you. But what’s easier: changing your shower habits, or investing in a nice lotion?

There are only so many hours in a day, and there’s nothing wrong with wanting to spend some time enveloped in comforting steam. You’re headstrong and unafraid. Just make sure you keep up with your water heater repair so you never find yourself without hot water!

Ice, Ice, Baby

If you shiver your way through your showers, I commend you. You’re a lot stronger than the rest of us.

Cold shower loyalists are a determined bunch. You’ve read the studies, and you’re not afraid to quote them at the hot shower crowd. Your skin is clear, your hair is shiny, and you strike fear into the hearts of weaker men.

You’re someone who likes to make the healthiest choices and always come out on top. You probably follow up your icy shower with a cup of Green Juice and a home workout. Your shower starts off your day, and you’re more likely to say something like “cold water is my caffeine” to your coffee-drinking coworkers.

The people around you are in awe of the way you reject basic comforts like warm water. At the same time, they envy your self-control and discipline. Keep doing what you’re doing, because it works.

Luke(warm), I Am Your Father

You can’t make up your mind about where you want the water temperature, so you leave the dial smack in the middle. Or maybe you’re consistently the last in line to use the shower, and your housemates have used up all the warm water. Either way: you’re indecisive.

It’s not your fault, and it’s not a character flaw. You think every decision through until you’ve untangled every possibility. Some may even say that you’re an overthinker.

Using lukewarm water in the shower is a compromise with yourself. You won’t have to suffer the consequences of scalding-hot water, like eczema or dry hair. But you also refuse to torture yourself to make your skin look a little better.

This is a good trait to have, honestly. The world needs people squarely in the middle of debates like this. You bring balance to your social groups and work to see all sides.

Hot Hot Hot…COLD

If you spend the first ten minutes of your shower using boiling hot water, only to turn it to the cold side for the last minute or so, you’re not alone.

You know the benefits of a cold shower. You know that it’s better for your hair and skin. But you just cannot bring yourself to spend ten whole minutes shivering with soap in your hands!

We don’t blame you. You’re someone who struggles with doing the “right” thing instead of the thing that feels good. Though you’re well-read and knowledgable, you have some trouble applying that to your everyday life.

Don’t feel bad for valuing your comfort. A minute or two of cold water is better than none. Your hair will get shinier, your pores will tighten, and your sensitive skin will thank you nonetheless.

Forgo the Shower, Choose a Bath

Well hey there, nonconformist. If you take more baths than showers, you value your comfort above all else. This isn’t a bad thing!

There are a ton of health benefits to taking a bath. It relaxes your muscles, helps to ease spinal pain, and can bring you to a Zen state. If you’re a bath loyalist, it means you care about your health and well-being.

This is a valuable trait to have nowadays! People are encouraged to sacrifice their well-being for work, and you refuse. Baths are your small act of rebellion against the Big Shower industry, and they are effective.

Right on, bath people. Right on.

Your Shower Temperature and You

Of course, this is all pure conjecture. To analyze your shower temperature choices, we would need to know your star sign, ascendant sign, Chinese zodiac, favorite Tarot card, and whether you prefer boxers or briefs. But the heat level of your shower does reveal a lot about the choices you make in the mundane parts of life.

And when more of us are stuck at home than ever before, isn’t the mundane all we have? Is there any downside to analyzing our bathing choices?
