What Are the 6 Dimensions of Wellness? A Simple Guide to Wellness

June 15, 2020

Physical, mental, and even spiritual well-being is crucial for a happy and fulfilling life. However, wellness is more than just being physically fit, eating a balanced diet, and avoiding stress.

Wellness is instead a complex inter-related combination of physical and mental states that collectively contribute to your well-being. This inter-related system consists of six facets, commonly known as the 6 dimensions of wellness.

What Are the 6 Dimensions of Wellness?

The 6 dimensions of wellness is a theoretical model that Dr. Bill Hettler came up with, a co-founder of the National Wellness Institute. The good doctor posited that once can achieve a complete and fulfilling life by integrating 6 dimensions of wellness in their day to day lives.

Before we delve into these six inter-dependent facets, let’s first define wellness.

What Is Wellness?

Most people would argue that wellness is subjective, and there’s much truth to that. Especially for mental wellness, what is wellness for you may not be wellness for another person. So is there one universally accepted definition of wellness.

Well, yes, but not a very concrete one at that. You can define the wellness of a state of mind and body that encompasses the following.

  • Unyielding positivity and affirmation
  • A profound, self-conscious resolution to achieve your maximum potential
  • A holistic process involving both the physical, mental, spiritual and even the environment

What Are These Six-Interdependent Dimensions?

Universally, these six dimensions of wellness are namely:-

1. Emotion

Emotion dictates our outlook on life. If we’re happy and loving, then life’s a breeze, but if we’re angry and hateful, then life is miserable. To conquer the emotional dimension, you need to:-

  • Be responsible for your actions even if you don’t want to
  • Embrace mistakes and learn from them
  • Laugh whenever you get the chance
  • Have a positive attitude towards life
  • Have relationships rooted firmly in mutual trust and respect

2. Physical

Your body is a temple, and as such, you have to clean and maintain it properly. That means you need to exercise regularly, eat a balanced diet, and avoid alcohol and other controlled substances.

Getting about four hours of exercise each week is a great place to start and eat a diet full of fruits, diets, and whole foods. You can also incorporate microbe formulas into your diet. Check them out at microbeformulas.com.

Limit your alcohol consumption to less than one beverage each day. Also, good hygiene is crucial to physical well-being.

3. Intellectual

The intellectual dimension centers on reading, keeping an open mind, and also thinking critically. Surrounding yourself with productive people also benefits your mental wellness. You can also eat certain foods that boost your cognitive functions.

4. Social

Human beings are naturally social creatures. As such, it’s important to interact and connect with others. The social dimension involves maintaining healthy relationships, developing good interpersonal skills. However, you need to avoid engaging with too many people, especially through social media.

5. Spiritual

Are you in touch with your higher self? The spiritual encompasses much more than religion. It’s about aligning yourself with beliefs that give value and meaning to the life you live.

You also need to be tolerant of different religions and beliefs as long as they don’t harm you.

6. Environmental

The environmental dimension is about connecting with the earth and its features and resources. That means avoiding acts that may be detrimental to the environment. Also, it means avoiding hazardous places that may injure you or be harmful to your health

Wellness Is Six Dimensions Away

These six dimensions aren’t as far as you’d think. Now that you know all the 6 dimensions of wellness, you can start your own journey to wellness.
