Want to Donate Blood? Here’s Why it Matters

There are so many good ways to help people, and being a blood donor is one of them. You may provide a better quality of life to someone who needs help, or even prolong the life of an injured person. It’s a good idea to help when you can, and may also really make you feel good. But you may not be sure of what all you can do to make things easier for people around you. Giving blood is a simple and easy way to express your care for other human beings, and help them improve (and continue) their lives.

Giving Blood is a Simple Process

It’s really very easy to give blood. People are sometimes concerned about needles, or whether it’s a safe thing to do, but it’s quick and not painful. Anyone who gives blood will be treated carefully, and handled by a medical professional. When you donate blood, you don’t have to really do much of anything. You show up, answer a few questions, donate, get a snack, and be on your way. It doesn’t take long, and it can make a life and death difference for someone who needs that blood to survive.

For people who have a rare blood type, giving blood is even more valuable as a way to help their community. If a lot of people don’t have that blood type, the donations of it will be low. The need may also be lower, but since blood doesn’t keep forever when it’s stored, it’s not always possible to have what’s needed without donation. There are also universal donors, which can provide blood for nearly anyone, and those people are important, too. In a pinch, their blood can be used even if the person needing the blood has a different type. But that only works with a specific combination, and it’s not possible to just mix any and all different blood types.

You Can Give Blood Frequently

Giving blood frequently is possible, since your body conveniently makes more of it on a regular basis. If you lose some, your body will replenish it. Talking to your healthcare professional about how often you can give blood is one of the best ways to make sure you’re handling it properly. Not everyone can give blood as frequently as others. It can depend on your weight, medical condition, and other factors. You don’t have to give as often as you technically can if that doesn’t work for you, but when blood is in short supply it can really make the difference.

It Doesn’t Take Long to Donate

Donating doesn’t take up your whole day, so you don’t have to worry about being there for hours and hours. You can donate pretty efficiently anymore, because it’s a common thing to do and the process has been streamlined relatively well. That’s good news for anyone who wants to donate blood on their lunch hour, or maybe give blood before they head out to do other things like running errands. Make sure you plan for a little over an hour for the whole process, although the actual donation will only take around 10 minutes. There is paperwork, too, and resting a little afterward to make sure you aren’t dizzy. But it’s a short process, overall.

Most Hospitals Have Blood Shortages

The majority of hospitals have blood shortages, at least at different times. That’s generally because they don’t get enough donations, or they have a good supply, but something happens in the community, and they need more than expected. Also, blood can’t be stored forever. With that in mind, the supply has to be replaced even if it doesn’t get used for anything. When you donate blood, you’re helping the hospitals in your area have what they need to properly treat people who come through their doors needing care. That’s a good feeling to have, and one that’s easy to get for a simple thing you can do in about an hour of your time.

Times of Tragedy May Require More Donors

When there are big tragedies in the community, such as a natural disaster or something man-made, it may be more important than ever to donate blood. In some cases, people also donate when there are tragic events in other areas. The blood is sent to the places that need it most, and can save lives that might have otherwise been lost. Overall, donating blood is one of the most important things you can do to help other people. It doesn’t cost money, it doesn’t take a lot of time, and it literally helps people stay alive. Those are all great reasons to keep giving, and to look for even more ways you can help the people in your community by doing small things that really do have a big impact.
