Life gets stressful for everyone from time to time. Managing stress can often feel impossible. The reason you often get stressed is because to live a fulfilling life, you must do things that are stressful (such as working, raising a family, working on our relationships, etc.).

In fact, according to The American Institute of Stress, research data on stress from 2017 reported that work was a source of stress for 62 percent of people. They also found in their 2014 research that 77 percent of people regularly experienced physical symptoms from stress, and 73 percent of people regularly experience psychological symptoms from stress.

While stress is horrible for everyone, it’s even more stressful if you’re also suffering from an anxiety disorder (or, any medical condition, really) and don’t have adequate health insurance. Take care of your health

You often don’t think about it, but poor eating and not getting enough exercise can contribute to stress levels in the body. Little things such as eating a well-balanced diet and cutting back on sugar and caffeine can truly make all the difference. And exercise has been directly linked to helping maintain stress. In fact, according to the Mayo Clinic, exercise in nearly any form (aerobic, yoga, etc.) can decrease stress through endorphin production and helping you sleep (both of which are good for managing stress levels).

Make time to relax

Life can get crazy sometimes. So, you don’t always make time for the things that help you relax. While it may feel like you’re avoiding more stress by getting things done, you’re actually working yourself into a frenzy that is awful for your health. Or, at least, that’s what Dr. Barton Goldsmith said in an article in Psychology Today. Dr. Goldsmith says, “The idea is to give your body, mind, and heart a chance to relax and recharge” and he urges everyone to dedicate one day a week to relaxation.

So, whether it’s nature walks, listening to music, reading a good book, or making time to bake; it’s important to find some “you” time. If there’s a hobby you enjoy, it may be time to start making more time for it. It will be good for your health.

Consider medical treatment

Is what you’re experiencing regular everyday stress? Or, do you maybe have an anxiety disorder that needs medical treatment? Stress is so common for everyone that you often overlook an anxiety disorder and brush it off as “just stress.” This seems to be proven by the fact that, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the US, and yet, only 36.9% of those suffering from an anxiety disorder seek treatment.

Perhaps this is because of the stigma, blaming it on “just stress”, or maybe it’s because of an insurance plan that doesn’t properly cover the help you need. Luckily, you can find a provider that will help you cover the mental health treatment that you may need.

Focus on things that truly matter

Often, you get caught up in what is stressing you out and you neglect to focus on the things that truly matter to you. Unfortunately, this just tends to lead to more stress and anxiety. In fact, the popular ACT Therapy, focuses on “commitment to values-based living” after it addresses how to respond to negative thoughts and feelings.

Focusing on what truly matters to you and making time for it will only help you ease stress and anxiety (if you’re not avoiding our responsibilities too much, of course). For example, some people feel lost without attending church at least once a week. They need this time to recharge and to focus on what matters to them. For others, making time for relationships you value is key to a happy life.

Tip: remember the importance of saying “no” and setting boundaries with all the people in your life. Your mental health is not worth sabotaging to make others happy.
