Tips to follow brushing your teeth when you have orthodontics

January 18, 2021

Do you have orthodontics and are not sure if you are brushing your teeth well or not? It is Normal since there are braces, the spaces are smaller than usual, and there are areas difficult to access in which food remains tend to accumulate … But, don’t worry! It’s not difficult, and you have to follow some guidelines and use the right tools. At Blue Bird Dentistry, Our experienced dentist in sandy oregon will give you a series of recommendations to brush your teeth when you wear orthodontics.

What type of brush should we use?

There are specific brushes to brush your teeth when you wear orthodontics. They usually have different types of heads. Usually, it has a V design. Electric brushes are also generally excellent thanks to their rotary oscillating action that already half the work for you. But the standard brush of a lifetime can also help us. The important thing is that you know how to do it.

Another of our recommendations for brushing your teeth when you wear orthodontics is the use of interproximal brushes, especially at night. They are much smaller brushes with filaments and a flexible head that allows us to penetrate the spaces created between the teeth.

How do we clean the braces?

We continue with our recommendations for brushing your teeth when wearing orthodontics. The first thing we have to do is remove all the movable elements of our device, such as the rubber bands. We now move on to brushing. We have to hold the brush at a 45º angle, making a circular motion over each of our teeth, both on the outside and inside. Tooth brushing should take 2 to 3 minutes. When you’re done, rinse off.

The oral irrigator or dental floss

You can complete your cleaning using dental floss. We know that it is a very cumbersome procedure, especially with orthodontics, so we recommend using an oral irrigator. It will take care of removing the remains that have not been able to be removed with brushing.

How is the interproximal brush used?

Insert the brush between your teeth and use it in the spaces between the tooth and the bracket. Pass it carefully from the bottom up just under the wire that connects each of the brackets. With the interdental brush, it is not necessary to use toothpaste. When you’re done, rinse again and use your mouthwash.

And so far, our recommendations for brushing your teeth when you wear orthodontics. Simple right? Well, now you should put them into practice!!
