Time For Your Offshore Medical Examination?

June 29, 2022

If you work in the oil and gas industry, you know how demanding the job can be for you and your body. Because of this, you must ensure that you are in good shape. You need to be physically and mentally fit so that you can perform your tasks efficiently.

This is where an offshore medical examination comes in. It can help evaluate your health to determine if you are fit for the job. So if it is that time for your offshore medical examination, you must be well prepared for it. In this article, we discuss what an offshore medical examination is all about, why it is necessary, and what it entails. Let’s delve into them.

What is offshore medical?

These are a series of tests and examinations done by those working in the oil or gas operation to determine whether or not they are fit for the job. These tests are done by doctors and nurses. Working offshore is quite risky, that’s why personnel working there must be physically and mentally fit. The procedure is done periodically and not once.

Why is an offshore medical examination necessary?

Through these tests and examinations, any health risks and physical abnormalities can be identified at an early stage. This can enable timely intervention. This is why it is crucial for any person working offshore to undergo this examination.

Who requires an offshore medical examination?

  • Anyone working offshore in the UK
  • Those personnel working in companies that recognize Oil and Gas UK [OGUK]

What does the offshore medical examination entails?

Generally, before the examination, the doctor will request you to fill in a questionnaire. The answers provide the doctor with information about your general health and if there is any underlying health condition that could make your work offshore unsafe or impair your fitness.

Other than that, you will undergo the following tests and examinations during offshore medical examination:

  • Physical examination by a doctor
  • Urine test [urinalysis]
  • Eyesight test
  • Hearing test [Audiometry]
  • A blood test
  • Blood pressure and pulse
  • Weight, height, and body mass

The offshore medical examination will take around one hour. If you pass the examination, you will be issued a certificate by the doctor, unless, if any medical condition is found, which will require consultation with the employer and/or Authority. The certificate is renewed every two years.

What you should bring to your offshore medical examination

Here are things you need to bring with you when going for an offshore medical examination:

  • Photo of ID or passport
  • Any medication you are currently taking
  • Your family doctor’s name, address, and contact
  • If you use glasses or contact lenses, you must bring them

What is the cost of offshore medical examination?

If you are preparing for an offshore medical examination, it is essential to understand the cost. Generally, the cost of an offshore medical examination varies from one medical provider to the other. But it ranges from £130- £200.
