The Different Types of Saunas, Explained

June 30, 2021

Thinking about getting into saunas?

According to some studies, relaxing in a sauna may provide similar cardiovascular health benefits to exercising. They also reduce stress and anxiety and can improve your mental health.

It may come as a surprise that not all saunas are created the same, however. There are many kinds of saunas. Before investing your money, it’s good to have a basic understanding of how each style works. We’re going to cover the different types of saunas for when you visit a local sauna or buy your own.

Traditional Finnish Sauna

First, let’s talk about traditional Finnish saunas. These are the oldest kinds of saunas and are made of wood. They contain a wood-burning stove that heats rocks. The rocks then release heat into the small room.

Sometimes, people refer to these saunas as dry cedar saunas because cedar is a recommended wood for the aroma.

These saunas will typically live near cabins and vacation homes because they do not rely on electricity, so they make for a tremendous off-the-grid option. The only downside is that they are not always as effective as electric saunas. They often take over 30 minutes to prepare and allow the room to reach peak temperatures.

Electric Sauna

Electric saunas are an excellent option for those who would like to detoxify their body but don’t want the hassle of operating a traditional sauna.

Electric saunas are often freestanding and can be placed in any spare room as an addition to your home.

They tend to heat up faster, and you can get them to a more precise temperature, which is an attractive feature because of their convenience. However, they do take up a lot of electricity, so they may not be the most environmentally friendly option.

Infrared Sauna

If you’re looking for a different experience, you might want to use an infrared sauna. Infrared technology creates a gentle, penetrating heat that warms the body gradually when used in saunas.

The difference between this type of sauna and the others on this list is that other kinds of saunas heat the air, which heats the body. Infrared saunas directly raise the temperature of the body without needing to raise the air temperature very much.

This makes infrared saunas excellent indoor choices because they’re safe to use in your home and don’t disturb the air temperature or humidity.

Different Types of Saunas and Their Benefits

Traditional, electric, and infrared saunas are some of the different types of saunas most commonly used. They are wonderful for detoxing, relaxing, and improving both mental and physical wellbeing.

Saunas are beneficial because they can help with regulating your heart rate and blood pressure. Saunas also may relieve pain from chronic conditions (such as arthritis) or injuries. But the most widely used benefit is clearing toxins in the body by sweating them out through pores.

No matter what kind of sauna you choose, using one 1-2 times per week can increase the quality of your life and health.
