The Different Types of Dental Treatments That Are Prescribed Today

September 19, 2022

Healthy teeth

Are you one of the millions of people struggling with stained and decayed teeth? If so, then it’s time that you do something about it.

Yes, there is no one-size-fits-all treatment available. But the dental industry and technology will always have something to meet your needs. In your own terms.

Read this whole guide and discover the types of dental treatments available today.

Restorative Types of Dental Treatments

First among the sought-after dental treatment is the restorative type. Methods of this kind rehabilitate teeth damaged by decay, injury, or disease.  It performs recovery, reconstruction, or replacement to restore functions within the oral region.

Filling is a process or method that uses composite resin to cover up small tooth cavities. The fast-drying character of the filler can restore the tooth’s appearance within minutes.

Crowns are a tooth-shaped cap that covers a tooth to restore its shape, size, and strength. Crowns can protect a tooth from decay or injury, support a tooth with a large filling, or cover a dental implant.

A dental bridge consists of a false tooth, or pontic, and two crowns fixed on its side thus forming a link. The pontic fills the tooth gap by attaching the crowns to adjacent teeth. Bridges use porcelain material for its resemblance to a tooth’s color and quality.

Dentures are types of oral prosthetic that replaces missing teeth and surrounding tissue. These false teeth use molded acrylic, metal, or plastic.

A dental implant is a prosthetic replacement for any permanent loss of root in the gums. It has a titanium abutment which we fix on the jawbone. Over time, the bone will fuse around this implant making it firm to support a denture, bridge, or crown.

Preventive Types of Dental Treatments

Preventive dental approaches are safeguards for one’s oral and dental health. This type of treatment aids in the prevention of more serious problems. The following are some of the most advanced preventive care options available today:

  1. Dental sealants – involve the application of a thin coating to the teeth to help prevent cavities.
  2. Fluoride treatments – Employs fluoride application on the teeth to help prevent cavities.
  3. Space maintainers – A space maintainer fills up spaces to prevent the teeth from shifting.
  4. Brushing – An ordinary oral hygiene involves toothpaste and a brush.

Cosmetic Types of Dental Treatments

Cosmetic dental procedures serve to enhance the appearance of your teeth and smile. Besides boosting your confidence, these cosmetic procedures will also improve oral hygiene. The following modern procedures attest to the popularity of cosmetic dentistry today:

A dental veneer is a tooth-like thin shell used to cover the front teeth to improve their appearance.  Their primary purpose is to correct a tooth’s color or hide chips and cracks. Veneers prefer porcelain or ceramic material for their appearance and durability

Braces and aligners are dental devices used to improve tooth position and appearance. Braces are stainless steel supports that help to straighten misaligned and crooked teeth. Aligners are tooth-shaped transparent trays that serve the same purpose as braces.

Teeth whitening is a dental method of removing tooth discoloration to retain its brightness. It uses bleaching, ultrasonic cleaning, and laser treatment to do the task. Many adopted this as standard, with the Kor whitening as an example.

What is Kor Teeth Whitening treatment? It’s another revolutionary technique and approach to resolving tooth discoloration and stains.

Surgical types of dental treatments

A surgical dental procedure is a treatment that requires removal or incision. It may be on the tooth enamel, root, gums, or jawbone. The goal is to preserve the surrounding elements in the oral region, or for faster healing.

  • Gum surgery: An operation carried out to cut diseased tissue and reconstruct the gum line.
  • Tooth extractions: This is a process of pulling out decayed or damaged teeth.
  • Tooth replacements: This procedure inserts artificial tooth replacement into the gums or jawbones.
  • Root canal operation: This operation removes the soft tissue from the center of the decayed tooth
  • Cosmetic surgery: This type of surgery improves the appearance of the teeth and mouth. It may involve other methods, such as teeth whitening, veneers, and dental implants.

Age-Based Types of Dental Treatments

Age-based dental treatments classify their prescription according to patients’ age. Certain procedures apply to specific age groups.

For example, we could give someone in their twenties braces to help them correct their teeth. But to adults, implants or dentures are more appropriate. Also, infants losing milk teeth won’t need any dentures or bridges.

Finding Your Type of Dental treatments

Even with a variety of remedies, you may find selecting a treatment is not outright that simple. Situational circumstances may limit, alter or hasten our decision and choice. And how are you going to weigh each of them?

Our need for an urgent solution can be a factor. In case a fitting procedure will be tedious, will you go for a quick fix? If our discomfort is intolerable, will you settle for a remedy?

Availability could be another one to consider. Sometimes, the dental treatment we’ll need, and our trusted experts aren’t accessible. Have a short list of specialists you may contact at any moment by phone or the internet.

Affordability can be an obvious concern. Remember that there are procedures that fit your budget or your insurance coverage. And in case it’s out of reach, you can plan and seek other options.

The advice of your dental professionals will always matter first. They are aware of what you need, how to get it, and the associated hazards. It is a must to corroborate every step of your decision with the best dentist around.
