Questions to Ask

  • What is your treatment goal?

What are you expecting from your treatment? Why do you want to go to treatment? These are all questions to ask about your treatment goals. These questions are important for you to begin your treatment.

There are so many diverse types of programs that are offered, based of different belief systems, different paths to recovery, and different tools to become sober. Here is a resource to help you to find the best center for you: https://www.samhsa.gov/find-help/national-helpline. Does the center offer inpatient services, outpatient services, or a combination of both? How long are those treatment options, a few weeks or a few months or a year or more? Is the treatment center based on the disease model of addiction, or something else? Are there programs for those people who do not believe in religion and for those that do? These are good questions to ask the center when asking about the programs they offer. They will help you to find the proper treatment for you and your addiction.

  • What is included in the initial assessment?

You want the center to have an initial assessment, they use this tool to help individualize a treatment program just for you. Without this assessment, they cannot determine what you need and how much time you need to complete your goals. The initial assessment is a crucial step for you to ask about. This assessment will answer questions for the center to help you to find the treatment that is best for you.

  • Is there a detox component to treatment?

Detoxification is a dangerous component to treatment, causing you to become extremely uncomfortable. Are there going to be medical professionals to help you through the detox process? It is important that they do to help you get through the process more comfortably. Make sure that the treatment center has the assistance you need to make this happen.

  • Will you take my insurance?

This is a particularly important question to ask because treatment can get awfully expensive. If the center does not accept your insurance, you will be responsible for the cost on your own, something you really do not want.

  • What training does your staff have?

You need to find out what kind of credentials the staff has to ensure that you get the best treatment. Is the medical staff trained in addiction treatment? What type of training do they have in order to help you the best they can? These are important questions to ask your center.

  • What kind of support does the center have for you after you complete your treatment?

Does your treatment center have ongoing support after you leave the center? This type of support will help you to make sure that your treatment is successful, and you do not have a relapse. Can you continue to talk to the therapists and counselors that helped you the most throughout your treatment? Do they have relapse prevention in place to help ensure that you will not relapse?

  • Can I stay longer if I feel that I need to?

If your insurance will allow it, will the treatment center allow you to stay longer if you feel that you need to? If you feel that you are not ready to leave, this could lead to a relapse. Make sure that your treatment center will let that happen if it is necessary.

These are all good questions that you need to ask to choose the best treatment center for your specific needs and your individual addiction. If the center can answer all the questions to your satisfaction, then it may be the place for you to go to get the help that you need to recover from your addiction. The perfect addiction recovery center is out there, and you can find it by asking all the right questions.
