And according to research published by the National Alliance on Mental Health, around one in five adults and 43.8 million people in total in the USA suffer mental illness in any given year. Moreover, we also know that these issues are increasingly prominent in the youth.

There are various medical treatments available to improve mental health management. Yet, people who suffer from these conditions are often hesitant to seek help due to lack of resources, discrimination, stigma, or a combination of the three. Even if you are someone who isn’t experiencing similar struggles, you can participate in sharing information and support tools to raise awareness for mental health issues worldwide.

All human beings experience some degree of mental stress at some point in their life. Whether or not they care about someone who does, are personally living with them, or only want to get involved, spreading awareness is critical. And here are a few ways you can do it.

Openly Talk About Mental Health

Mental illness is an issue that shouldn’t be kept in the dark. The more you talk about it, the more people become aware of its detrimental effects. It would be best to openly discuss such issues with those around you, especially those who are personally experiencing them. Doing so will let you know how they are feeling and how it affects their health daily.

It is also wise to regularly check on people you know who are suffering from mental illness. Who knows, you might be able to protect them from hurting themselves when you keep track of all their daily activities.

Go For A Career Path Where you Can An Positive Impact

The best possible way to spread awareness and help out people affected by it is by choosing a career path that aligns with mental health treatment. Plus, there are various fields in the healthcare sector that provide you with an opportunity to help those in need of assistance. Consider a future in social work, nursing, psychology, or counseling.

If you want to go with the mental health counselor’s career path, find out what educational pre-requisites you need. What role will you take on? And how much will you get paid? Although, pay should be the last thing on your checklist in such an instance. Most counseling roles require a master’s degree. So, search for a few online master of counseling programs and enroll in your preferred one before applying for a counselor’s job.

Take Advantage Of Volunteering Opportunities

Volunteering allows you to raise awareness about mental health and lets you fight the stigma surrounding it. When you volunteer in a mental health care facility, it will enable you to stay in touch with people from different professions, backgrounds, discussions, stories. And most importantly, those who face mental health issues. Such an increase in exposure will spread more awareness about mental health difficulties and the health challenges and obstacles mentally affected people face every day.

So, when we increase our exposure to mental health issues through volunteering, we can help negate discrimination and the stigma associated with mental health. However, it doesn’t mean that you volunteer 24 hours a day. An hour or two every other day will be enough to make a difference. You can volunteer at mental health charities, involve yourself in mental health awareness campaigns, or even help out a friend or family member facing a difficult time.

Writing about personal mental health experiences is one of the most potent techniques to raise awareness in today’s digital age. It will provide everyone with a massive eye-opener through your own or somebody else’s mental health issues. Writing about your experience will give you a way to share your stories, encourage non-judgmental speech, which can leave an ever-lasting impact on others. You can share your thoughts and views via written material through various platforms such as Medium, Instagram, Twitter, etc.

You can also start a mental health blog to spread awareness about mental health issues through other people’s stories, experiences, and encounters. Moreover, you can promote this blog on all your social media accounts so that everyone can read it. The more you write about your and other people’s experiences dealing with mental health; the more normalized the conversation about mental health be in the future.

Don’t Forget About Our Children

Education starts at an early age. The same is the case for promoting awareness about something. It is why we should not forget about our children and ensure that they remain well-informed about mental health issues starting from an early age. Kids naturally have a curiosity and are not afraid to ask questions about anything. That also includes mental health. Adults, especially their parents, can help them understand and everything related to mental health. Doing so will let them make healthier choices when they grow up and experience stress-free life. It might also encourage them to consider education in the public sector with degrees such as an online mph, and work in public health to spread awareness and help people in need of psychological assistance.

Participate In the Efforts to Expand And Support Mental Health Legislation

Healthcare policies are crucial and can significantly impact the lives of people living with mental illnesses. You can get in touch with the local government and ask them to promote and officially recognize all mental health events of the past. You can also encourage them to pass legislation that provides better care for individuals experiencing mental health issues. If nothing else, whenever elections come around, search for pro-mental health candidates and ask everybody to vote for them.
